OUA roundup: No. 2 Golden Hawks remain undefeated
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock Badgers women's hockey team
(1-3-1) lost a heartbreaker 3-2 in overtime to the No. 2 ranked
Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at the Seymour-Hannah Centre Friday
night.
Laurier opened the scoring 5:11 into the second period when Candice
Styles (Orangeville, Ont.) and Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, Ont.)
setup Kaley Powers (Kingston, Ont.) on the power play for her first
of the season. The Golden Hawks would make it 2-0 at 13:29 of the
second when Laura Bartolini (Mississauga, Ont.) beat Brock's Beth
Clause (Hamilton, Ont.) with a shorthanded goal for her
team-leading third of the campaign.
In the third period, the Badgers would make it a one-goal game on
the man advantage as Maja Samborski (Toronto) and Karolyn McIlmoyle
(Newmarket, Ont.) setup up Michelle Lee (Innisfil, Ont.) for her
first goal of the season. Three minutes later, Brock Maggie
Matheson (Kingston, Ont.) would beat Laurier goaltender Liz Knox to
tie the game 2-2. Samantha Simms (St. George, Ont.) and Kristen
Dewsbury (Oshawa, Ont.) would pick up assists.
With 17 seconds remaining in overtime, the Golden Hawks Ironside
and Katherine Shiriff (Carrying Place, Ont.) would find Stephanie
Crarey (Newmarket, Ont.) for the game winner.
In a battle between two of the top goalies in the OUA, Clause would
record 36 saves for the Badgers while Laurier's Knox turned aside
21 of 23 Brock shots for the victory.
GUELPH 5, WATERLOO 2
The No. 7 Guelph Gryphons move to 4-1-0 after their 5-2 win over
Waterloo (1-2-0) on Saturday.
After a Gryphon was hauled down in the corner, the puck moved out
to the point, where Laura Milton (Drumbo, Ont.) slid the puck
cross-ice to Jody Hodgins (Stayner, Ont.). Hodgins wound up and
sent a hard pass to the far side of the net where Jessica Zerafa
(Mississauga, Ont.) was able to redirect the puck into the back of
the net.
The play would go back and forth until late in the period when
Zerafa was taken down but not before she could knock the puck to
Milton. Milton slapped home the Gryphons second goal of the
game.
The second period saw Waterloo put their first mark on the
scoreboard after a hard shot from Sarah McCorquodale (Waterloo,
Ont.) found the back of the Gryphon goal.
After some great puck work in the zone, a shot from the point was
redirected to the blade of Tori Woods (Orangeville, Ont.) who
stuffed it between the pads of the Waterloo netminder.
Entering the third period, Zerafa netted her second goal of the
game while on the power play.
A long pass from Carla D'Angelo (Hamilton, Ont.) sent the puck
directly to the stick of Zerafa fired one top shelf on the Waterloo
goalie, increasing the score to 4-1.
D'Angelo would try her hand at the offensive side of the game,
sending a long backhander towards the net that would just squeeze
inside the post.
TORONTO 4, WESTERN 1
The No. 10 Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Western Mustangs 4-1
on Saturday at Thompson Arena in London, Ont.
Ragan Danford (Madoc, Ont.) opened up the scoring as she buried a
Kelly O'Hanlon (Markham, Ont.) rebound 5:43 into the game.
Just over eight minutes later on a Blues power play opportunity,
Alie Brind'Amour McClure (Waterdown, Ont.) finished off a passing
play down low as she backhanded the puck past Western goaltender
Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) into the top corner of the net.
Third-year forward Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) scored just 1:37 into
the second period to give the Blues a comfortable three-goal
cushion.
The Mustangs finally got on the board when Ellen Seedhouse (Whitby,
Ont.) received a stretch pass from teammate Aoife Cox (Hamilton,
Ont.) and made no mistake, deking Melissa Muir (Winnipeg) out to
find the back of the Toronto net.
U of T added an insurance marker as Darby Smith (Madoc, Ont.)
capitalized on the empty net opportunity to secure the 4-1
victory.
YORK 3, WINDSOR 1
The No. 10 York Lions played their third game of the regular season
on Saturday against the Windsor Lancers in Windsor.
Finally, in the third period, York broke the stalemate by scoring
the first goal of the game. York's captain Courtney Unruh (Fort St.
John, B.C.) scored shorthanded at 6:43, unassisted. Windsor fought
back and managed to net one of their own four minutes later.
Assistant captain Michelle Guy (Kitchener, Ont.) scored a goal of
her own, with assists from Jennifer Petkovics (Mississauga, Ont.)
and Unruh.
Windsor decided to pull their goalie, and York's Kristie Wilson
(Hamilton, Ont.) put in the final goal with passes from assistant
captain Autumn Mills (London, Ont.) and Kelsey Webster (Duncan,
B.C.).
BROCK 4, WATERLOO 3
The Brock Badgers (2-3-1) ended there four game losing streak with
4-3 road victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday
afternoon.
Brock took an early 2-0 lead midway through the first period with
back-to-back goals from Karolyn McIlmoyle (Newmarket, Ont.) at
10:23 on the power play and from Hailey Webb (Orillia, Ont.).
Just under three minutes into the second period (2:33), Waterloo
would make it 2-1 on a goal from Mandy Harrop (Simcoe, Ont.).
Brock's special teams would go to work again at 13:44 when Maja
Samborski (Toronto) and Brianne Veale (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) set
up Shannon McLeod (Port Dover, Ont.) for her second of the season
putting the Badgers up 3-1.
Waterloo would answer back with a power play goal of their own at
15:06 of the second period, as Sarah McCorquodale (Embro, Ont.) set
up Caitlin Brydges (Ariss, Ont.) for her second of the
campaign.
Brock would regain their two goal lead at 10:40 of the third period
when McIlmoyle and senior Kelly Walker (Brampton, Ont.) set up
Samborski who would beat Waterloo goalie Erica Bridgewater
(Georgetown, Ont.) for the eventual game winner.
With their goalie pulled and a man advantage Waterloo's Brydges
would register her second goal and third point of the night at
19:16 making it 4-3.
LAURIER 1, GUELPH 0
The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to
the Laurier Golden Hawks this afternoon at the Mitchell Centre.
Both teams came out racing again in the third period but it was
Laurier who would get on the scoreboard early in the period to take
the lead. After making the initial save on the Laurier shot, the
Guelph goalie, scrambling to cover the puck, was forced into the
net while Katherine Shirriff's (Carrying Place, Ont.) shot slid out
from under her pad and found the back of the net.
The Gryphons fought hard to come back, and with the goalie pulled
and the final seconds ticking down on the clock, they managed to
get some quality shots on net, but none would make it across the
goal line, leaving the final score at 1-0 Laurier.
WESTERN 3, YORK 2
The Western Mustangs (1-4-1) notched its first victory of the
season Sunday afternoon behind Chantal Morais' (Guelph, Ont.) third
and fourth goals of the season.
Netminder Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) was instrumental in the
victory as the visiting York Lions (2-2-0-0) outshot Western 46-24
on the afternoon including 18 of those coming in the second
period.
Morais got the scoring started early, beating Lions goalie Sydney
McMurter (Orillia, Ont.) on a goalmouth feed from Kailey Hooker
(Mississauga, Ont.) at 3:21 of the opening frame.
York answered back in the dying seconds of the period as a scramble
in the crease favoured Andrea Joyce (Oakville, Ont.) as she picked
up her first career OUA goal.
The Mustangs capitalized on their opportunities as Morais and Ellie
Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.) scored while York's Kelsey Webster
(Duncan, B.C.) beat Ulrich on a fluttering puck from the
perimeter.
Entering the final frame up 3-2, Western clung to the narrow lead
as the hungry Lions fought and clawed their way into the offensive
zone for much of the period, outshooting Western 12-3.
WINDSOR 7, TORONTO 4
The Windsor Lancers knocked off the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues
7-4 on Sunday afternoon at South Windsor Arena.
The game was appeared to be a tight one after a scoreless first
period, before Windsor opened up the scoring to take a 3-0 lead
early in the second period.
Cagla Baktiroglu (Cambridge, Ont.) scored just two minutes into the
period for Windsor's first goal of the game. Manon Davis (Sudbury,
Ont.) chipped in on a Lancer power play five minutes later, while
Kelly Calhoun (Weston, Ont.) added to Windsor's lead less than 30
seconds later.
Toronto's Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) put the Blues on the scoreboard
at the 13 minute mark of the frame, before Davis added her second
power play goal of the game to close out the period.
The third period continued to be a high scoring affair with each
team scoring three goals apiece.
Toronto tried to close the gap built up the Lancers with a goal by
Brenley Jorgenson (Kingston, Ont.) on a Blues power play.
Two minutes later, Davis continued to dominate the score board with
her third goal of the game to put Windsor up 5-2 with thirteen
minutes remaining in the game.
Darby Smith (Madoc, Ont.) would score for Toronto and Hill would
add her second of the game, while Ashley Kirby (La Salle, Ont.) and
Samantha Hoover (New Lowell, Ont.) would each score their first
goal of the season for Windsor in the second half of the third
period to finish out the game.
