Laurier earns gold in international tournament
KARUIZAWA, Japan - Wilfrid Laurier's women's curling team
claimed the gold medal representing Canada at the Karuizawa
International Curling championships with a 12-11 win over Sweden.
The squad consisted of skip Hollie Nichol (Markham, Ont.), Laura
Hickey (Toronto, Ont.), Danielle Inglis (Kleinburg, Ont.) and
Hillary McDermott (Guelph, Ont.).
Laurier advanced to the tournament after claiming their second
straight CIS championship in Montreal last March. This year’s
CIS champion will compete at the FISU games in Ersurum, Turkey.
The Golden Hawks advanced to the final four after finishing 6-1 in
round robin play. They defeated New Zealand 7-2, Korea 6-5, Japan
6-1, Nagano Selection 5-3, China 7-3 and Germany 7-4. Their only
loss came against the Swedish team 9-6.
In the semi-final the purple and golf edged out Germany 7-6 to
advance to the championship dra w.
The men’s team from Manitoba also claimed gold with a 10-3
win over Japan.
The team will now return to compete in the Crossover event hosted
by Trent University.
