While the Bishop's University campus went into a deep freeze last weekend, Alex Perno, the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball head coach, was not among those searching for an extra blanket. Instead, Perno was in Guayaquil, Ecuador (average temperature, 30° C) last weekend, delivering clinics to coaches and players.
Perno took advantage of a rare weekend off from league play to work with approximately 20 of the top players in the South American country, helping to improve their fundamentals and their defence.
"The people here have been unbelievable," said Perno. "For every practice there have been 200 people in the stands, and the atmosphere has been terrific."
The fourth-year bench boss conducted four practices and delivered a two-hour coaches clinic in his whirlwind four-day, 10,000-kilometre trip.
Perno's Gaiters return to league play on Friday, January 20 as they visit the UQAM Citadins.
