| The Sea~Hawks gave it all they had, but the tank
was empty as they fell to the St. Francis Xavier X-Women 56-35 to
end their season in the third place game at the 2011 Subway AUS
Women's Basketball Championship. Post Kirsten Jones was
instrumental in the St. FX win as she poured in 20 points on 9-18
shooting, and grabbed 10 rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. AUS
defensive player of the year Ashley Stephen had a strong defensive
game with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Brittany Dalton was
the high scorer for the Sea~Hawks with 14 points and 7 rebounds.
In the first half the Sea~Hawks shot just over 23% from the field, and missed all four three-point attempts. The halftime score was 27-16 for the X-Women. The third quarter would prove to be no different as the Sea~Hawks managed to put up only 8 points in each of the first three quarters. Both teams did not shoot the ball particularly well, as the Sea~Hawks shot 28% on the game and the X-Women shot slightly better hitting on 35% of their attempts. With the loss, the Sea~Hawks season has come to an end, while the St. FX team will now advance the CIS central regional tournament for a chance to play in the CIS tournament. | The Cape Breton Capers claimed their third
consecutive women's basketball championship on Sunday, defeating
the UNB Varsity Reds by a score of 65-60.
The Capers built a six-point lead at the half with Kari Everett leading the way. UNB battled back in the second half, gradually cutting into the Caper lead, until with 30 seconds to go the Varsity Reds knotted the game at sixty on a Leah Corby three. On the next Caper possession Jahlica Kirnon would drive to the hoop for a basket plus an unsportsmanlike foul. The hoop and ensuing foul shot put the Capers up three with the ball, leaving the Varsity Reds no choice but to foul. Kirnon would once again find herself at the foul line where she calmly sealed the game and the 2011 Subway AUS Championship for the Capers. Kirnon, a tournament all-star, led the way for CBU with 17 points in the win. Kari Everett, the tournament MVP, added 16 points in the win. Tournament all-stars Amanda Sharpe and Leah Corby led the Varsity Reds with 20 and 18 points respectively. The other members of the tournament all-star team were Brittany Dalton from Memorial and Kirsten Jones from St. FX. UNB will now play host to the CIS Eastern Regional Qualifier next weekend where they will have another opportunity at qualifying for the CIS Championship taking place in two weeks time at the University of Windsor.
