Capers celebrate Hodgson's career, retire No. 14 in her honour
SYDNEY, N.S. - One of the great careers in the recent history of CIS women's basketball came to an end last March when Kelsey Hodgson played her final game in a Capers uniform.
Since arriving at Cape Breton University in the fall of 2005, Kelsey made her presence known and in five record-setting seasons to follow, became one of the greatest student-athletes to ever don the orange and green.
"I've been involved with university sports for a long time and I believe Kelsey, is not only one of the greatest players in Capers history, but one of the greatest university players in CIS history," said John Ryan, Director of Athletics at Cape Breton University. "I feel privileged to have been able to watch her play throughout her career and I am pleased to be able to raise No. 14 to the rafters in honour of her accomplishments here at CBU."
The most productive Caper in history with 1,588 career points in 100 regular season games, Kelsey also holds the single-season Atlantic conference mark of 515 points set in 2008-09.
A two-time CIS scoring champion with a 25.8 point-per-game average in 2008-09 and 22.1 average in 2009-10, the 5-foot-10 forward ended her illustrious university career with three straight selections as a CIS all-Canadian.
A three-time AUS first team all-star, Kelsey also captured AUS MVP awards in each of her final two seasons. During her five-years at CBU, Kelsey helped lead the Capers to three AUS titles, winning AUS Championship Tournament MVP honours once, and a silver medal at the CIS Women's Basketball Championship.
In addition to her second CIS scoring title in her final season, Kelsey also led the AUS in free-throw percentage (90.4), steals per game (3.00) and three-point shots made per game (2.6), while finishing third in minutes played (33.4 mpg) and assists (3.2 apg).
Kelsey's school record 1,588 points ranks seventh in AUS history. She also has the second highest single game points total and the record for most three-pointers made in a game when she hit nine and finished with 46 points against the UNB Varsity Reds in January of 2009.
A two-time Female Athlete of the Year at CBU, Kelsey, who was the AUS female student-athlete nominee for the prestigious BLG Award, has also been a member of Canada Basketball's Development Team wore the Maple Leaf at the 2009 Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia.
