MONTREAL - Senior Anneth Him-Lazarenko registered a "double-double" as McGill remained undefeated with their sixth straight win, a 72-61 home-court victory over Concordia in women's basketball, before a crowd of 750 at Love Competition Hall in the Sir Arthur Currie gymnasium, Thursday.
The Martlets wore special pink and white uniforms - instead of their traditional red and white colours - to raise awareness of "Shoot for the Cure", an annual CIS-wide basketball fundraiser for breast cancer.
Him-Lazarenko, a 5-foot-10 forward from Laval, scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. She was 9-for-15 from the field and went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.
McGill also had a 14-point performance from sophomore guard Marie-Eve Martin of Granby, Que. Freshman Kaylah Barrett of Brampton, Ont., led the Stingers with 21 points and teammate Nekeita Lee added 14.
The Martlets led 18-16 after the opening quarter, 35-28 at halftime and held a 60-40 advantage after three quarters. McGill shot 46.4 per cent from the field, 40.0 from three-point range and 76.2 from the line, compared to the Stingers, who shot a feeble 29.9, 11.8 and 90.5 (19 of 21), respectively.
"We shot well and played a solid inside game," said McGill head coach Ryan Thorne, whose troops had a 38-33 advantage in rebounding. "Defensively we did a good job of limiting their leading scorer (Yasmin Jean-Philippe) to only two points (both on free-throws). But I wasn't happy with the high number of turnovers we committed."
The Martlets coughed up the ball 28 times, compared to 15 by the Stingers, who were credited with an astounding 20 steals.
McGill leads the five-team Quebec conference with an unblemished 6-0 record, while the third-place Stingers fell to 4-4. Concordia will host fourth-place Bishop's (1-6) on Saturday, while McGill plays at Laval (1-5) on Sunday.
