Trinity Western's Josefson travelling to Africa with Athletes in Action
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western
University’s Karla Josefson is going to Africa this summer
and is packing her passion for basketball and her heart for
missions.
The Spartans second-year guard from Port Coquitlam, B.C. is joining
Athletes in Action on an 18-day trip, from Aug. 4-21, that will
take her through Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
“When we’re in Kenya, we’re going to be working
with a medical aid group and assisting wherever is needed,”
Josefson said. “Rwanda is still up in the air a bit and
we’re not sure exactly what we’ll be doing. Then in
Uganda, it will be more basketball focused. We’re going to be
playing games against a few women’s teams there and also
doing some kids basketball camps.”
This will be Josefson’s first missions trip of this magnitude
but one she is positively confident about thanks to her deep-seeded
trust that God has a plan for her.
“The opportunity came up and at first I didn’t really
think about it much,” she said. “Then I started praying
about it more and more and realized this was a wonderful
opportunity to do both basketball and missions. This trip allows me
to combine my love for basketball with a chance to share
God’s word.
“And the whole process has been surprisingly easy. The money
has come in relatively quickly and it just goes to show how God
will bless you when you put your trust in him and go out on a bit
of a limb for him.”
Josefson will be joined on the trip by former Spartans
women’s basketball player Heidi DeHaan.
Shortly after her return to Canada, Josefson will join her TWU
teammates as they prepare for the team’s first season under
new head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul.
