CIS women's basketball Wednesday roundup: Selfe, No.5 Mustangs close out No. 1 Windsor for victory

| WATERLOO, Ont. - The Waterloo Warriors opened 2011
losing their ninth straight game by a score of 75-48 to the Brock
Badgers on Wednesday night at the PAC gym in Waterloo. With the
win, the Badgers extended their win streak to seven games and sit
tied for second in the OUA west with a 7-2 record. The Warriors
fell to 0-9.
Brock led 28-6 after 10 minutes and forced the last place Warriors to 40 turnovers on pace to the 27-point victory. Senior Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) led the Badgers offense registering 13 points. Sophomore Hailey Neal (Mississauga, Ont.) chipped in with season high 12 points. Senior Hillary Woodside (Fall River, NS), junior Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.), and freshman Andrea Polischuk (Brantford, Ont.) rounded out the Badgers offense chipping in with nine, eight and eight points respectively. Polischuk also added a career high seven rebounds. Saraya Hickey (Tsawwassen, BC) led all Waterloo players with eight points while picking up three rebounds. Tori Lee (Grimsby, Ont.) picked up seven points and added six rebounds while Sarah Leitch (Barrie, Ont.) and Mackenzie Lougheed (Owen Sound, Ont.) each had six points. Brock shot 41.0% from the field going 32-for-78. Despite going 0-for-12 from beyond the arc, Waterloo shot 39.0% going 23-for-59. The Badgers next action is this Saturday at 6pm on the road when they travel West to take on the No. 1 The Warriors next action is Saturday, January 8 as they make the short trip over to Wilfrid Laurier University to face their cross-town rivals. | LONDON, Ont. - The No. 5 Western Mustangs survived
a late comeback from No. 1 Windsor Lancers to move into first place
with a 57-54 victory in Alumni Hall on Jan. 5.
Jacklyn Selfe led the Mustangs attack with 23 points and five rebounds. Matteke Hutzler was solid in the pain with 13 points and added nine rebounds. With the win the Mustangs move into first place in the OUA West with an 8-1 record. The Lancers drop to second place at 7-2 overall. Both teams struggled to find their shots early in the game as the defences for either team were playing well. Windsor was able to hit a few tough shots to lead 14-9 after the first quarter. The Mustangs responded in the second to shut down the Lancers offensively, holding them to six points on the quarter. Western held a seven-point halftime advantage at 27-20. The third quarter was a hard fought affair as neither team could sustain a large run. With each team scoring 17 apiece in the quarter it remained a seven-point lead for the Mustangs 44-37 at the end of the third quarter. The Lancers would not go away without a fight and managed to shut the Mustangs down on a couple possessions to cut into the lead and tie the game late in the fourth quarter. Western responded with a couple of key baskets to put the game out of reach with a lay-up at the buzzer by Windsor making it a one-possession game. Next up for the Mustangs is a home game at Alumni Hall against the McMaster Marauders on Sat. Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. The Mustangs will head to Windsor in two weeks to have their rematch with the Lancers in a game that could decide home-court advantage for the playoffs. Source: Western Sports Info

HAMILTON, ONT – Jackie Nimec (Binbrook, Ont.), Taylor Chiarot (Hamilton, Ont.) and Alyska Lucan (Barrie, Ont.) each scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the Marauders fell 60-50 to the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks Wednesday night.
Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.) scored a game high 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had seven steals to lead the Golden Hawks.
Nimec scored 15 and Chiarot added 13 points and nine rebounds. Lukan had 10 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.
The Marauders will look to regroup when they travel to London on Saturday, January 8 to take on the Western Mustang. The game tips at 1:00 pm and can be heard live on 93.3 CFMU and online at cfmu.msumcmaster.ca
