OUA roundup: Gaels soar to road win over Lions

TORONTO - Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont., had 15 points and four rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting in Queen's 66-44 victory over the York Lions in Toronto on Friday evening, extending the Gaels regular season winning streak to six games.

Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., was the Gaels second leading scorer with 13 points, as well as contributing four assists and three steals, moving Moore to the third leading scorer in the OUA with 204 regular season points. First-year post player Hanna Koposhynska of Toronto, led the Gaels in rebounds bringing down 6 boards.

The Gaels had a shaky first quarter and trailed the Lions by five points at the end of one. The second quarter was a turning point for Gaels as they gained offensive momentum and outscored the Lions by 10 points. At the end of the first half the Gaels had recovered to lead by five points 29-24.

The last two quarters saw the Gaels continue to dominate the Lions both offensively and defensively, holding the Lions to eight and 12 points in the third and fourth quarters respectively. The Lions were unable to recover from such a large deficit and the Gaels sailed to an easy victory. At the final buzzer the Gaels had a 22 point lead with a score of 66-44.

York's leading scorer was Emma Dillon of Aurora, Ont., registering 13 points in the loss while Kate Mowat of Whitby, Ont., contributed six rebounds for the Lions.

The Gaels current six-game winning streak is their longest winning streak since the 2003-04 season when they had a perfect eight-game stretch. The win also improves the Gaels record to 9-4 as they continue to lead the OUA East Division over the Carleton Ravens. York drops to 1-11.

The Gaels next game is against the Laurentian Lady Vees in Sudbury on Saturday evening. The Gaels will play the Lady Vees again later in the month when they host their first home game at the new Queen's Centre on January 29.

TORONTO 61, OTTAWA 54


At Toronto, Nicki Schutz scored 20 points and added 14 rebounds as the Varsity Blues (6-7) upended the Ottawa Gee-Gees 61-54.

Varsity Blues teammate Erin McNeely contributed 10 points in the victory.

Despite the loss, Hannah Sunley-Paisley was a force on the court, earning game-highs in points (21) and rebounds (17).

Ottawa drops to 7-5.

LAKEHEAD 84, LAURIER 61

At Wilfrid Laurier, the duo of Lindsay Druery and Sarah Gordon combined for 43 points as the Lakehead Thunderwolves (7-4) defeated the host Golden Hawks 84-61.

Druery earned a game-high 23 points, while Gordon chipped in 20.

Renata Adamczyk led the Golden Hawks with 11 points.

Laurier dropped to 4-7 with the loss.

RYERSON 61, CARLETON 56

At Ryerson, Lisa Goldring scored 22 points to lead the host Rams (8-5) to a 61-56 win over the Carleton Rams (8-4).

Rams teammate Angela Tilk added 10 points of her own to the Ryerson cause.

Ashleigh Cleary led the Ravens with 13 points, while Kendall MacLeod earned a game-high 13 rebounds.

LAURENTIAN 81, RMC 33

At Laurentian, Darrah Bumstead scored 19 points and added 14 rebounds to lead the Lady Vees (6-6) to a 81-33 win over the RMC Paladins (0-13).

Laurentian teammate Norma Jean Roberts earned a game-high 23 points for the Lady Vees.

Carley Lewis led the Paladins with nine points.
