ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - A fast start propelled the Simon Fraser Clan to a 95-69 victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades in Canada West women's basketball action Thursday at Envision Athletic Centre in Abbotsford.

The game was a make-up from the Nov. 20th postponement. The Nov. 21st game will take place Feb. 17th in Abbotsford.

The Cascades, which started three rookies, fell to 1-6 on the season. The CIS No. 1 Clan improve to 8-0. The win marked the SFU's 43rd straight victory, two shy of the school record of 45 straight wins.

The Clan jumped out to an early 26-8 lead after one quarter, and had built up a 47-32 advantage at the half. "We had a pretty good first quarter, but didn't play very well after that," said SFU head coach Bruce Langford following the game.

"Laurelle [Weigl] had a really great second half, and Kate Hole (Stony Plain, AB) is playing very well right now and had a good game as well."

SFU had 9-0, and 11-0 runs in the opening half. The Cascades finished the half with a 15-4.

"I have kind of mixed emotions of the game. I thought we had some good moments. But there were also moments where we just weren't really there at all," said Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer. "They got the jump on us early which is the worst thing you can do against a team like that. I was happy at how we responded in the second quarter, but by that point, the game had already been basically decided."

Jane Meadwell scored 23 points for the Cascades, going 10 for 10 from the line. Meadwell, who was six-of-14 from the field, leads Canada West women's basketball in scoring.

Weigl (Stony Plain) scored a season high 25 points, adding seven rebounds in the victory. Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Vernon, B.C.) added 14 points for the Clan, while Robyn Buna (Kelowna, B.C.) finished with 10 points.

Both teams are off for the holiday break, with the Cascades resuming their season Jan. 8 with a home against Winnipeg and Manitoba, while the Clan visit No. 8 Alberta and No. 5 Saskatchewan.
