No.1 SFU rolls to 42nd straight win
Burnaby, B.C. – For the second straight night, the No. 1
ranked Simon Fraser University Clan women’s basketball team
recovered from a slow first quarter start to win their 42nd game in
a row, defeating the University of Calgary DInos 110–73 on
Saturday. The win improves the Clan to 7-0 on the season, while the
Dinos fall to 6-4 on the year.
“I thought we responded well and maintained our
composure,” said SFU head coach Bruce Langford following the
game. “We shot the ball well, and that [Matteke Hutzler]
played one of her best games this season.”
It was the Dinos who showcased their conference leading offence in
the first quarter, opening the game on an 11-to-2 run. The Clan
answered right back with a 16-to-5 run to tie the game at 18, and
finished the quarter up 26-22 following a Robyn Buna (Kelowna,
B.C.) three-pointer at the buzzer.
With the game tied at 31-31 in the second quarter, it was the Clan
who exploded on offence, closing the quarter on a 19-to-9 run
featuring two three-pointers by freshman Carla Wyman (North
Vancouver, B.C.) to lead 50-40 at halftime.
More of the same from Simon Fraser in the third, as the Clan led by
as much as 22 points (69-47) midway through the frame, and led
77-57 at the end of the period. Through three quarters the Clan had
out rebounded the Dinos 40-to-27, including 19-to-11 on the
offensive glass.
It rained three-pointers for SFU in the fourth quarter, with the
Clan hitting all five straight three-pointers to open the period,
cruising to the 110-73 win.
Buna finished as the Clan’s leading scorer, finishing with 18
points and shooting 6-for-9 from beyond the three-point arc. Kate
Hole and Matteke Hutzler (Napanee, Ont.) each added 15 points in
the win.
For the Dinos, a pair of Megans each scored 11 points, as Megan
Schaufele and Megan Lang combined for 22 points.
Calgary now enters their winter exam break, while the Clan face UFV
in Abbotsford on Wednesday in their final game before the break.
Game time is set for 7 pm.
