Concordia stings Martlets with two-point setback

MONTREAL - Kristin Portwine scored a game-winning jump-shot with 54 seconds remainng and registered a "double-double" with 22 points and a dozen rebounds as Concordia hung on to edge McGill 67-65 in women's basketball at the Loyola campus, Saturday.

The results spoiled a 16-point, nine-rebound performance by McGill veteran guard Nathifa Weekes, who shot 6-for-10 from the field and made all four of her foul shots.

Teammates Anneth Him-Lazarenko and Stephanie Bergeron added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Martlets. Him-Lazarenko also pulled down nine rebounds.

The Stingers led 20-17 after the opening quarter and 30-27 at halftime, before McGill rallied in the third stanza to take a slim 41-40 lead.

McGill shot 41.2 percent from the field (21/51), 33.3 from three-point range (6/18) and 81.0 from the charity stripe (17/21), compared to Concordia, which shots 34.3, 15.0 and 75.0, respectively.

Concordia evened their record at 2-2 and plays at Bishop's (1-2) on Nov. 27. Laval leads the Quebec conference with an umblemished 4-0 record.

The Martlets finished the semester with a 1-4 record in league play and will now take a month off for the December exam break. They will resume action at the UQAM Holiday tournament, Dec. 27-29.
