CIS women’s basketball fights breast cancer: Shoot for the Cure back for third year

OTTAWA (CIS) – The CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) proudly announced Friday its fundraising initiative to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - and other related cancer charities - is up and running for a third straight season.

The Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success in its first two years as the WBCA presented a cheque for $81,512 to the Breast Cancer Foundation at last March’s CIS championship in Regina, a year after collecting $50,320 in its inaugural season.

In 2008-09, an additional $11,000 was amassed by schools that elected to donate their fundraised money to local cancer organizations.

Once again this year, CIS women’s basketball programs will raise money through regular season games, exhibition matches, tournaments or special events.

Memorial University of Newfoundland kicked off the 2009-10 activities with the Sea-Hawks Think Pink Weekend held Oct. 9-11, while Royal Military College played an exhibition game against St. Lawrence College on Oct. 14.

The initiative resumes this weekend during the University of Manitoba’s Bisons Invitational Tournament, and with York hosting Wilfrid Laurier in exhibition action at Bill Crothers High School, on Friday night.

“The WBCA raised over $92,500 last year. Our goal this year is to exceed $100,000,” said UNB head coach and Shoot for the Cure project manager, Jeff Speedy. “Each CIS women’s basketball program will hold its own fundraising event and the WBCA will also raise some additional funds at the CIS championship at McMaster University in Hamilton, next March.”

“We’re very proud of our efforts over the past two years but we want to do even more and really hope to go over $100,000 this year. We lost one of our own this year in former Laurentian star Carolyn (Swords) Sturgess. This has really hit home for many of us and will certainly serve as extra motivation to reach our goal.”

The fundraising initiative was the brainchild of Rod Gilpin, the longtime bench boss of the Bishop’s women’s program now in his second season as head coach of the Gaiters’ men’s team.

The 2009-10 Shoot for the Cure schedule is currently comprised of over 30 events, with more dates to be announced over the next few weeks.
