McTaggart named Saskatchewan head coach
SASKATOON, Sask. - Huskie Athletics is proud to announce Joanne
McTaggart as the new head coach for the University of Saskatchewan
men’s and women’s cross country teams.
McTaggart joined the Huskie Athletics coaching staff in August
2008 for track & field. Since that time, she has led the Huskie
women’s track & field program to two straight Canada West
championships and been named Canada West women’s track &
field coach of the year each time.
“Huskie Athletics is happy that Joanne has agreed to expand
her coaching duties with us,” said athletic director Basil
Hughton. “Her quick success with the track & field team,
as well as her competitive history makes her the perfect person to
take over the position.”
An alumnus of track & field, McTaggart competed with the
Huskies as a sprinter from 1972-76. During that time, McTaggart set
a world record for 300-metre sprint. She then went on to compete on
the Canadian national team from 1972-78 making the Canadian Olympic
team in 1976 and competing in the 100, 200, 400, 4x100 and 4x400
events in Montreal.
“I’m excited to expand my coaching opportunities with
the Huskies,” said McTaggart. “As a student-athlete,
Huskie Athletics helped me achieve my personal goals and it is a
joy and privilege to give back to the program as a
coach.”
Joining McTaggart’s cross country coaching staff is Murray
McCormick and RossAnn Edwards. McCormick is a long-time coach with
the Saskatoon Track Club and was the distance coach for the 2009
Canada Summer Games Track & Field team. Edwards is an
experienced distance coach with the Riversdale Track Club and was
the triathlon coach for the 2009 Canada Summer Games. Both have
level three coaching certifications.
The cross country season begins in late September with the Canada
West/CIS Championship in early November.
