Steve Boyd named Queen's Gaels cross country and distance track head coach
KINGSTON, Ont. – Queen's Athletics
& Recreation announced today that alumnus and Queen's Track and
Field Hall of Fame Member Steve Boyd (Kingston, Ont.) has been
named the head coach of the cross country and distance track teams
for the 2010-11 season.
Boyd, who is a five-time national champion in track, cross country and road racing, was a member of the Queen's cross country team from 1982 to 1987. He helped lead Queen's to two national titles, in 1983 and 1984, and was the team's top finisher in 1983, crossing the line in 9th. In 1982, running as an individual in his first season, he finished 5th at the national championships, winning the Alfie Pierce Award as Queen's top rookie athlete.
“I am excited about this opportunity and looking forward to lending my experience and expertise to the Gaels this season and beyond,” said Boyd. “I believe we have a talented group of runners to contend at the provincial level this season and ultimately I am aiming to build a perennial national champion contender."
Boyd is the founder and coach of the local distance running club Physi-Kult, a Kingston-area club that was formed in 2000. The club was formed to allow both non-competitive and competitive runners to share in Boyd's life-long passion for competitive distance running, and to offer the expertise that he has gained from a life spent in balanced pursuit of maximum personal performance. In 2009, Boyd coached the club's boy's team to a second place finish at the 2009 Canadian Championships.
“We are honoured to have such a well-respected and distinguished member of the local and national running community leading our cross country and distance track program,” said Janean Sergeant, Manager of Interuniversity Sport. “Steve brings to the position a vision, passion and proven record of developing running talent that will put Queen's into the upper echelons of the sport not only in Ontario, but across the country.”
In addition to his athletic experience, Boyd has been an adjunct professor at Queen's since 2001 and is acutely familiar with providing assistance and mentorship to athletes in combining the elite athletics and scholarly pursuits.
Along with his experience of coaching in the Kingston-area, Boyd is also highly involved with distance running at the national level. He is the personal coach for three Canadian runners who have competed on the international stage, including Dylan Wykes, Emily Tallen and Matt Pieterson. Wykes has been a national marathon team member since 2008, Tallen is a two-time national team qualifier in cross country and Pieterson was a member of the 2010 Canadian FISU cross country team that competed at Fort Henry Hill in April 2010.
Boyd begins his tenure with Queen's Cross Country and Distance Team immediately.
