Western Mustangs:

GUELPH, Ont - The Western Mustangs wrestling team travelled to Guelph this weekend for a prestigious meet. During the event, four Mustangs won medals but none were gold. Steven Takahashi lost in the 55 kg men’s final in a 3rd round tie-breaker to Brock Wrestling Club’s Jake Hergenhein. Teammate Ilya Abelev won bronze in the 66 kg class.

The women had a strong showing with Brianne Barry placing 3rd in the 55 kg weight class and teammate, Shelby Riddell placing 3rd in the 82 kg weight class.  London-Western teammates, Liz Sera (55 kg) and Katie Patroch (59 kg) placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Mustang captain, Larissa D’Alleva finished fourth at 63 kg.

The tournament attracted top wrestlers across the country including four United States national team members who all won gold. Abelev, a second year Kinesiology student, lost to Josh Churella of the New York Athletic Club who took first place in the 66 kg weight class.

Abelev, who won the CIS Championships last year as a rookie, is currently ranked 2nd in the CIS at 65 kg.  Takahashi, is also the defending champion at 55 kg, and is ranked first, and will likely retain that ranking as Hergenhein is not CIS eligible.

Takahashi, Abelev, and Richard Balfour (see photo) will be among the top Mustangs to compete in the Ontario Junior (U20) Championships in St. Catharines on January 28.  The women’s team will be led by rookies Valerie Ouellette (48 kg), Cassie Leigh (48 kg), and Andrea Wakelin (59 kg).

The Mustangs will be split with the juniors in St. Catharines while the seniors will be at their home tournament - the Western Open Wrestling - which will be contested in Thames Hall Gymnasium on the same date, January 28.  The tournament will be held on 3 mat surfaces staring at 9:30 am and will run into the afternoon. Teams expected to compete are Guelph, Brock, McMaster, Toronto, Queen’s, and Concordia.
