Brock wrestlers capture eight medals at Canada Cup

GUELPH, Ont. - The Brock University wrestling club captured eight medals at the 2011 Canada Cup held at the University of Guelph. On the men's side, Jake Hergenhein captured gold at 55kg defeating Frank Mensah of Burnaby Mountain in the finals. Also placing first overall was Brock's Chris Laverick at 74kg who defeated Connor Malloy of Cattown WC in the gold medal match.

The Brock women brought home six medals in total including one gold, two silver and three bronze. At 51kg, Diana Ford captured gold after defeating Genevieve Haley from the Dinos WC in the finals. At 48kg, Jade Parsons lost to defending Olympic gold medalist Carol Huynh to capture silver. Also placing second overall was Laura Steffler at 63kg losing to Canada's Larissa D'Alleva in the finals. Jasmine Mian (48kg), Stephanie Riopel (51kg) and Alexis Kilroy (63kg) all placed third overall in their respective weight classes.

Two-time Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek had a wrestle-off for the World Team and defeated Jillian Gallays (3-1, 1-1, 6-0).

At the Junior Pan Ams in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Jason Brenton-Hurst captured gold at 74kg. Brenton-Hurst, who will be attending Brock this fall, was the lone Canadian male wrestler to capture gold. The Badgers Marissa Sorrell finished fourth at the Junior Pan-Ams at 63kg.
