OUA roundup: No. 6 Marauders, Gaels and Mustangs earn 10th wins

KINGSTON, Ont. - Playing their first game in the new Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC), the Queen's Gaels knocked off the visiting York Lions in straight sets on Sunday afternoon.

The Gaels came out swinging in the opening set as they built a big lead and took the first set 25-17. The Lions would hang tight the rest of the way but the duo of Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., and Bryan Fautley of Oakville, Ont., proved to be too much for the Lions to handle. Queen's took the final two sets 25-22 and 25-23.

Fautley had an excellent all-around game for Queen's picking up 11 kills, five digs and two stuff blocks. Zeeman also had 11 kills on the day and had four digs and two aces.

Jordan Matthews of Ajax, Ont., led the Lions on the day with nine kills and seven digs. Felipe Humana-Paredes of Toronto was the leading point-getter for York (3-9) with 12 points.

The Gaels, who improved to 10-2 on the season, will be back in action next Friday night when they host the McMaster Marauders at 8 p.m.

MCMASTER 3, RYERSON 1

At Ryerson, Jeremy Groenveld (Welland, Ont.) had a team-high 11 kills to lead the McMaster Marauders (10-2) to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 24-26, 25-21) victory over the host Rams (3-9) on Sunday.

Tyler Santoni (Kingston, Ont.) contributed 10 blocks and 15 points, while Ryan Hudson (Winnipeg) contributed 32 assists.

Chris McLaughlin (Ottawa) had a game-high 23 kills and 27 points in a losing effort. Ryerson teammate David Marynowicz (Hamilton, Ont.) contributed 14 kills and 18 points.

WESTERN 3, LAURIER 2

At Western, the Mustangs (10-1) survived a marathon match with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, winning 3-2 (29-31, 25-11, 25-20, 23-25, 16-14) on Sunday.

Western's Mathieu Poulin (Winnipeg) had 14 kills and 17 points for the Mustangs, who keep pace in a heated race at the top of the OUA standings. Teammates Mathew Waite (St. Thomas, Ont.) and Reid Halpenny (Exeter, Ont.) had 11 kills each.

Laurier's Samuel Schachter (Richmond Hill, Ont.) had 16 kills and 19 points in a losing effort. John Wilson (Charing Cross, Ont.) earned 12 kills and 14 points for the Golden Hawks (5-7).

GUELPH 3, WATERLOO 0

At Guelph, the host Gryphons (8-5) swept the Waterloo Warriors (5-7) in straight sets 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-20) on Saturday.

Winston Rosser (Whitby, Ont.) led the Gryphons with 12 kills and 15 points, while teammate Andrew Bartram (Aurora, Ont.) contributed 10 kills and 13 points.

James Evans (Rockwood, Ont.) earned 10 kills and 11 points for the Warriors.

RYERSON 3, TORONTO 0

At Ryerson, the Rams made short work of their cross-town rivals, defeating the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24) on Saturday.

Luka Milosevic (Toronto) earned 19 points, including 16 kills for the Rams. Ryerson teammate Chris McLaughlin (Ottawa) contributed 12 kills and 17 points.

Steven Kung (Toronto) of the Varsity Blues (5-7) tallied 15 kills and 17 points against the Rams.

YORK 3, RMC 0

At RMC, the York Lions defeated the host Paladins 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-16) on Saturday.

Jordan Matthews (Ajax, Ont.), Reid Hall (Georgetown, Ont.) and Tarun Swaroop (Toronto) earned 13, 10 and 10 points respectively for the Lions.

RMC's Paul Demers (Manitowaning, Ont.) made 10 kills for the Paladins (0-13).

WINDSOR 3, WATERLOO 2

At Waterloo, the Windsor Lancers (7-4) rallied from two sets down to defeat the Warriors 3-2 (19-25, 24-26, 25-19, 34-32, 16-14) on Friday.

Josh Edwards (Kingston, Ont.) led the Windsor cause with 16 kills and 24 points. Will Alexander (Windsor, Ont.) made 40 assists.

Waterloo was led by Tyler Vivian (Mitchell, Ont.) who earned a game-high 25 kills and 26 points.

QUEEN'S 3, RMC 0

At RMC, the Queen's Gaels won the Battle of Kingston 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-11) against the Paladins on Friday.

Jackson Dakin (Courtenay, B.C.) made a game-high 23 assists for the Gaels.

Philip Gulajski (Ottawa) of the Paladins had a game-high 10 kills and 11 points in a losing effort.

MCMASTER 3, LAURIER 0

At McMaster, the Marauders defeated the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-20) on home court on Friday.

Jeremy Groenveld (Welland, Ont.) led the Marauders with nine kills and 11 points. Teammate Ryan Hudson (Winnipeg) contributed 18 assists.

Samuel Schachter (Richmond Hill, Ont.) led the Golden Hawks with 10 kills and 12 points.

TORONTO 3, GUELPH 0

At Guelph, the Varsity Blues defeated the host Gryphons 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-19) on Friday.

Steven Kung (Toronto) earned 12 kills and 16 points for the Varsity Blues, while teammate Michael Manning had a 10-point effort.

Winston Rosser (Whitby, Ont.) earned 12 points for the Gryphons.
