Calgary's Effah, Nelson represent Canada at Penn Relays

CALGARY – The University of Calgary's outstanding sprint duo of Sam Effah and Amonn Nelson is headed to the City of Brotherly Love.

Effah and Nelson, both Calgary natives, will represent Canada Saturday night at the Penn Relays "USA vs. The World" event in Philadelphia, broadcast on ESPN2 beginning at 6 p.m. MT.

The event, which runs at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, attracts thousands of athletes at various levels from across North America and around the world. It is the oldest and largest track and field event in the USA, held annually since 1895.

The USA vs. The World format pits several of the top nations against each other in the relay events. Canada is sending five relay teams including two men's 4x100 metre squads, a women's 4x400 metre team, a distance medley relay team, and a visually impaired 4x100 metre relay.

Effah, the three-time defending CIS male track athlete of the year, will run in the men's 4x100-metre relay against the other Canadian team, a pair of American teams, one each from Trinidad and Tobago, the Bahamas, and Germany, and two from Jamaica. One Jamaican team will feature world record holder Usain Bolt, who Effah previously faced head-to-head at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in a 100-metre heat.#

He is coming off a solid performance at the Louisiana State 'Blue and Gold' meet where he ran a personal best 10.28 in the 100 metres, the fastest time by at Canadian at the event.

Nelson, the 2010 CIS champion at 300 metres, rejoins two of her teammates from the 2009 Summer Universiade on the Canadian 4x400-metre relay entry. Along with Esther Akinsule and Carline Muir, Nelson was part of Canada's first Universiade gold medal in athletics since 1983 last summer in Belgrade, Serbia. The USA vs. The World event features six 4x400-metre women's teams: Bahamas, Canada, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and two American teams.
