A stronger field for CIS title as Golden Bears, Dinos and Blues make their mark

OTTAWA – The CIS championships are a mere ten weeks from now. Host Université of Montréal will welcome Canada’s top University swimmers February 23-25th to an event that will definitely generate some excitement until the very last race.

“The CIS swimming program is seeing an influx in its depth,” said Swimming Canada CEO. “We now seeing teams fighting to the last race to see who will come on top.”

At the end of last month, University of Toronto and Swimming Canada co-hosted the University Challenge Cup at the UofT pool.

The Varsity Blues team won the 2011 University Cup with the top overhall point score, yet Calgary’s Dinos took the top spot in the Women’s event and University of Alberta’s Golden Bears won the men’s event.

In what proved to be a very close race for first, both men’s and women’s titles came down to the final relays of the day. On the men’s side, the Blues had a two-point lead over Alberta heading into the final event, however the Golden Bears proved victorious with a victory by two tenths of a second.

“It was a nail biter to see who would fight to get on top of that podium,” added Lafontaine.

“We saw some great character traits shine from the swimmers and coaches competing at that event. It gave us a taste of the excitement we’re expecting to see at the CIS championships in Montreal.”
