Men's soccer: CIS sanctions Winnipeg for eligibility violation
Source: Canada West Communications
EDMONTON – Canadian Interuniversity Sport has ruled on a self-disclosed eligibility violation by the University of Winnipeg during the start of the 2012 men’s soccer season.
A Wesmen student-athlete participated in two exhibition games and four regular season games while ineligible in accordance with CIS regulation 126.96.36.199.1 and is required to sit out the first regular season game of conference play following a one game suspension assessed at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season. The suspension occurred under a different jurisdiction, prior to Winnipeg’s participation in CIS men’s soccer.
CIS has confirmed that the violation was unintentional. As per the new CIS policy, the following sanctions have been imposed:
• Winnipeg forfeits all games in which the ineligible player participated during the regular season. The Wesmen’s record for the first four matches of the 2012 season shall be changed as 0-4, and all games won by Winnipeg shall be credited to the opposing team with an official score of 1-0. A note reading “Winnipeg forfeits two wins and a tie due to use of an ineligible player” shall accompany the official 2012 Canada West soccer standings. All game statistics remain intact, except for the removal of those statistics credited to the ineligible player.
• Winnipeg is fined $4,000, plus an additional $250 for costs associated with the investigation.
• Winnipeg is placed on probation for a period of 24 months, during which time a university may continue to participate in Canada West and CIS competition, but will be subject to a higher level of violation if another violation occurs;
• There will be no sanctions against the student-athlete involved in the violation as the individual is considered to have been an unwitting participant in this matter and he is already ineligible for the fall season based upon CIS Policy.
