Mount Allison 1 UNB 1 Final

Ryerson 1 Laurentian 4 Final

SUDBURY, Ont. - The Laurentian Voyageurs took on the Ryerson Rams in a hard fought game this afternoon. Both teams came out strong, but it was the Voyageurs who took the lead 30 minutes into the match. Ryerson made many attempts to tie the score, but it was the Voyageurs who dominated to earn a win of 4-1

The first half was a strong offensive game by both teams with the Ryerson Rams earning the first shot on net early in the half. However, it was Laurentian Voyageurs, Dieri Drame (Sudbury, ON) who put Laurentian on the board first, 30 minutes into the game. Eight minutes later it was mid-fielder Stephen Fattore (Brampton, ON) who scored to put Laurentian ahead by two. With a strong defense led by goal keeper Matt George (Georgetown, ON) the Voyageurs were able to eliminate any opportunity for the Rams to tie the game. The first half continued to see aggressive plays from both teams with Laurentian and Ryerson earning equal chances to score a goal. Before ending the first half, James Bond (Hamilton, ON) scored to grant the Voyageurs with a 3-0 lead at half time.

The second half saw an eager Ryerson team looking to score big and close the points gap that Laurentian held. But again, it was Drame who put the Voyageurs further ahead with a header, off the thrown in, to put it past Ryerson's goal keeper Christian Maraldo (Mississauga, ON) 17 minutes into the half. Following the goal, the Rams brought in goalie Aaryon Gaeeni (Toronto, ON) in an attempt to stop the bleeding preventing any more opportunities for Laurentian.

In hopes of putting the Rams on the board, Jamie Baker (Aurora, ON) took advantage when a cluster around the Voyageurs net provided the opportunity, taking away the Voyageurs shutout. The remainder of the half saw close opportunities and hard battles between both teams, landing players from each team being shown yellow cards. The Rams pushed hard to catch up with the Voyageurs lead but the combination of early goals and a strong defense was more than enough for the Laurentian Voyageurs to walk away with the win.

Following the game, assistant coach Tony Tagliaferro stated "the boys worked hard all game and played hard defensively." He went on to say "it shows that a good week in practice makes for good results on weekends." The Laurentian Voyageurs are now at a 3-4-2 record and look to earn a win over Trent University on Friday, October 7, 2011. Laurier 0 Guelph 2 Final

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons and the Laurier Golden Hawks matched up in Guelph this afternoon (Oct. 2) for an intense game that ended 2-0 in Guelph’s favour.

The Gryphons add another win to the standings with 6-3-1 – now in third position in their division, and the Golden Hawks drop 2-5-3 to sit in seventh.

The game started out with a bang only four minutes in when Robert Murphy (Ottawa, ON) broke away from Hawk defence in his usual fashion, and fired in the Gryphon’s first goal of the match. He nearly followed his first goal with another only minutes later but Laurier goal-keep Brett Harrington (Tillsonburg, ON) managed to deflect it out. Murphy is now the all-time leading Gryphon goal scorer. He entered the game tied with Tony Zanini on 23 goals, and now is in first place with 25 goals, including 10 this season.

Gryphon defense was extremely strong this game and cut Laurier’s attacks before they could gain any momentum. Jacob Stolle (Stittsville, ON) who traditionally plays defense was moved up to a forward position to make up for some missing Gryphon players. He filled the role exceptionally well and was the power behind the second Guelph goal. After some action outside the Hawk’s net Stolle stole the ball off of their defense and crossed it to Murphy who was waiting out front the net. Murphy sent it in to strengthen the Gryphon lead.

Laurier came into the second half fighting hard to catch up and managed to infiltrate Guelph’s defense a number of times creating some close-goal scares. The Gryphons returned the pressure with a number of attacks on Laurier’s net but couldn’t break through Harrington. A final scary moment of the match for the Gryphons occurred after a free kick was given to Hawk Donald Chmura (Waterloo, ON) right outside Guelph’s net – but he hit the top post. The game finished 2-0 in Guelph’s favour.

The Gryphons next play the Brock Badgers on October 7, in St. Catharines. The game begins at 3:15pm.
