SASKATOON - Two goals and an assist from Jerson Barandica-Hamilton helped fuel the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 3-0 win against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Field 7 in Saskatoon’s PotashCorp Park. In the 11th minute Barandica-Hamilton got his first goal of the match on a penalty kick when the Pronghorns were called for a handball inside the 18-yard box. Moments later the Huskies made it 2-0. Barandica-Hamilton sent a cross into the Lethbridge box which bounced around until Austin Boryski ripped a half volley into the upper corner. Saskatchewan started the second half with a flurry of chances. Barandica-Hamilton rewarded the Huskies for their pressure with a long bending shot that found its way just under the cross bar. He almost tacked on an assist moments later when he sprung Luigi Bekwayo on a partial breakaway. Pronghorn keeper Colin Pattison charged the ball and forced the shot wide. Lethbridge’s best chance of the game came from Jeremy Panchuk who had a good look at goal midway through the first half but Huskie keeper Mark Diakiw was up to the task. Pattison kept the Pronghorns in the match with a number of fantastic saves in the second half. Samuel Frank of the Huskies received a cross and only had the keeper to beat, but a diving effort from Pattison kept the Huskies lead to three. Minutes later Josh Northey made a run down the outside and was able to beat everyone except Pattison. Pattison made eight saves for Lethbridge, while Diakiw made seven saves in the match. Through two games of Canada West play the Huskies and Diakiw are yet to concede a goal. With the win the Huskies move to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Pronghorns fall to 0-2-0. Next week the Huskies will travel to British Columbia to take on the University of the Fraser Valley and the University of Victoria, while Lethbridge faces the University of Calgary Dinos. Match Notes: Yellow cards shown to Jordian Farahani, Josh Northey and Eoin McFadden of the Huskies and Dario Pasquotti of the Pronghorns. Source: Saskatchewan Sports Info |

EDMONTO - Despite a late offensive push, rookie goaltender Haydon Armstrong held off the No.7 Alberta Golden Bears as the Calgary Dinos claimed a 2-1 road victory, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
Third-year forward Izak Lawrence, the team’s leading scorer last year with 12 points, got his first of the season while senior forward Jeremy Jenkyns potted his first, as well as the game-winner, for the visitors.
Notching his third point in two games, senior striker Milan Timotijevic scored the single for Alberta.
It was the road team that opened the scoring, however, with Lawrence heading a Christopher Wycliffe-Jones pass to the top right of the Golden Bears’ net in the 7th minute of the first half.
Jenkyns had a chance to double the lead in the 26th minute, but his deflected shot just went wide of the near post, giving Alberta the chance to balance the scoreboard four minutes later when Timotijevic was left alone in the middle of the Calgary zone, aimed his shot, and buried it into the bottom left corner of the Dino net.
Yet in the 44th minute, Jenkyns found a lane towards the Golden Bears goal and struck short side to make good on his second chance of the game and put Calgary up by one going into halftime.
The Dinos took that momentum into the second half, stifling the Alberta attack and pushing their own but couldn’t put away the insurance goal on third-year netminder Jay Vetsch, who replaced starting goalkeeper Matthew Preston at halftime.
Vetsch, an Edmonton native, made the best save of the game to keep the Dino lead at one in the 84th minute when Calgary’s Jevan Bailey, a force for the visitors as soon as he stepped onto the pitch, had a point-blank shot that the ‘keeper gamely faced head on.
The field then tipped towards the Dino end as Timotijevic and Marcus Johnstone, who scored a pair against Lethbridge on Saturday, fired shots on Armstrong in injury time, but the Holland Landing, ON native kept the Golden Bears at bay to preserve the win.
The now 1-1 Bears take a road trip next weekend to B.C. to visit the Victoria Vikes and Fraser Valley Cascades while the 1-1 Dinos begin a home-and-home series against Lethbridge in Calgary next Saturday.
