York 1 Laurier 1 Final

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with the York Lions in their first game of the season at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Hawks, who were eliminated by the Lions last season in the OUA Quarter-final, were able to maintain a majority of the ball possession early in the contest.  Eventually, Matthew Maughn of Mississauga, Ont., was able to get a chance on goal but it was turned aside York keeper Sortiri Varlokostas of Toronto.

York would open the scoring when Alon Badat of Thornhill, Ont., beat Hawks keeper Brett Harrington of Tillsonburg, Ont., in the 20th minute.
The Golden Hawks picked up the pace during the second half and would find the equalizer in the 60th minute.  Donald Chmura of Waterloo, Ont., finished off a play in the box by beating Varlokostas low into the corner for his first of the season.

Both teams would push for a winner late in the match but neither team could find the net and the Hawks earned a key point early in the season.
Harrington finished the match with four saves for Laurier while Varlokostas stopped three.

The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Field. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.

Windsor 1 McMaster 2 Final

HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster men's soccer team earned their first win of the 2011 soccer season with a win over the Windsor Lancers by a score of 2-1. Marauders Gersi Xhuti (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Abraham James (Mississauga, Ont.) were the goal scorers for McMaster.

In the first half of the match, both teams competed for that all important first goal but did not come through. The Lancer defence continued to shut down Marauder forward Mark Reilly (Hamilton, Ont.), while the McMaster defence took possession in the back field. Minimal opportunities arose for either team in the first while the goal keepers had yet to be tested. Both teams went into the second half scoreless.

Six minutes into the second half, the scoring was finally opened. Lancer Michael Pio (Windsor, Ont.) put the ball in the back of the net in a scramble in the box. In the 51st minute, the score was now 1-0 for the visiting team.

The Marauders pushed back hard after the first goal of the match and in the 53rd minute responded to the Windsor goal by scoring one of their own.  Forward Xhuti earned the first Marauder goal of the season with a scramble in front of the net. The Windsor goal keeper had no chance.

All tied up at one, both teams continued to take possession back and forth to score another one for the win. In the 59th minute, less than ten minutes after the first goal of the match was score, Rookie defenceman James scored his first goal as a Marauder with a header off a McMaster cornerkick.

Windsor would do their best to put on the pressure to tie the score up but McMaster would not allow it, earning the win in the Marauder home opener for the 2011 soccer season. The Marauders face the Western Mustangs Sunday afternoon in hopes of going undefeated after two matches.

Trent 1 Laurentian 1 Final

SUDBURY, ON – The Laurentian Voyageurs found themselves in an early hole Saturday afternoon in Sudbury but they managed to salvage a point as the Trent Excalibur were in town to face the Laurentian Voyageurs.  The games started off with a furious pace and that continued until the final whistle, when the scoreboard read 1-1.

Just one minute into the game, Laurentian captain, James Bond (Hamilton, ON) struck a free kick very cleanly and it was labelled for the bottom right corner if not for Trent goalkeeper, Josip Bosnjak (Pickering, ON), who got a finger to it and pushed the ball around the post.  Bond remained a main part of the action until the 23rd minute when he received a red card as a result of a tackle that was deemed “serious foul play”, leaving Laurentian with 10 men for the remainder of the game.

Despite having the man advantage, Trent could not capitalize as the teams headed into half-time deadlocked at zeros.  Coach Castrechino’s half-time speech must have struck a chord with his boys because the first play of the 2nd half was a partial break by Laurentian’s Andrew Posteraro (Sault Ste Marie, ON) but Bosnjak charged out and slid to knock the ball away.  Despite being down to 10 men, the Voyageurs continued to generate chances but between posts and a hot goaltender, the men couldn`t get a ball into the net.

In the 69th minute, Trent was finally able to take advantage of their man-up situation as Devon Coutu (Bowmanville, ON) was left unmarked and buried a shot into the bottom left corner.  Laurentian continued to press, however, and their persistence paid off in the 73rd minute in the form of a penalty kick.  Davor Alisic (Charlottetown, PEI) made no mistake from the spot, knotting the game at 1.

The Voyageurs, feeding off their tying goal, pushed for the winner but it was more of the same; a combination of posts and a hot goaltender.  In extra time, Laurentian`s keeper, Dave Szczepaniak made a key save to help garner a point for the blue and gold.

Coach Castrechino was pleased with his team’s performance despite the result.

“Considering playing with 10 men for over ¾ of the game I am very happy with the result. We never gave up and had most of the possesion and scoring chances for the game. I thought we deserved the 3 points but we will take the point and move on.”

The Voyageurs head to North Bay this Wednesday to face the Lakers in the second leg of the Riley Cup, which Laurentian currently holds a 5-0 lead on aggregate. Continue to monitor the Voyageurs’ progress at www.luvoyageurs.com.

Laurentian University's Department of Athletics is home to 15 varsity sports teams. The Voyageurs and Lady Vees decorated history of pride and tradition includes 61 provincial championships as well as 9 national championships in 50 years of competition.
