Laurier 2, Guelph 1 Final - OT
OUA playoff

WATERLOO, Ont. – Spencer Cawker of Mississauga, Ont. scored in the 111th minute to send the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to the OUA quarter-finals with a 2-1 overtime decision over the visiting Guelph Gryphons.

The fourth year forward broke down the left side of the field and fired a shot that picked the top right corner of the net and beat Burlington, Ont. native Chad Paparoni.

"I'm happy any time we win," said head coach Mario Halapir. "We made some tactical errors throughout the game, but the one thing I'm really pleased about is that we didn't give up."

To move the match into extra time, Ben Clifford of Milton, Ont. scored from just inside the top of the 18-yard box in the 89th minute off a Christopher Walker throw in. The fifth year team captain fired the shot with his left foot between two defenders and past a frozen netminder.

"We knew it was going to be a battle today and Guelph scored an early goal," said Clifford following the match. "The guys showed a lot of heart, with non-stop battling and getting the late goal."

The Gryphons got on the scoreboard early in the first half when their leading scorer Robbie Murphy of Ottawa, Ont. shot the ball over Laurier netminder Martyn Hooker of Brantford, Ont. and the wind knocked it down and into the net.

The Golden Hawks outshot the visitors 17-8 with Donald Chmura of Waterloo, Ont. leading all players with four shots.

Laurier will now play in the OUA Quarter-Final on Saturday, September 30th. The time and location will be determined by the outcome of the McMaster-Waterloo game. The Hawks two possible opponents are the York Lions and Western Mustangs.

Queen's 3, Laurentian 1 Final
OUA playoff

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 27, 2010) – Joseph Zupo of Toronto, scored the game winning goal to propel the Queen's men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in the first round of the OUA playoffs at Richardson Stadium.

Zupo, who was the best player on the field for both teams and was named Queen's MVP, converted a Gaels corner in the 20th minute that fell into the box and was easily deposited by the rookie defender into a gaping Laurentian net.

The center back was also instrumental in the Gaels first goal of the match as his free kick caused havoc for the Voyageurs defenders and a loose ball was eventually put away by Eric Koskins of Richmond Hill, Ont.

Zupo was also a key member of a strong defensive effort by the Gaels that allowed just two shots in the second half and prevented Laurentian from tying the match after Issiaka Sidibe of Sudbury, Ont., pulled the Voyageurs to within one late in the first half.

Queen's secured the victory in the 88th minute when Michael Arnold of London, Ont., broke in alone and fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net past Voyageurs keeper David Szczepaniak of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Maxfield Materne of Toronto, earned the win for Queen's as he made seven saves on the afternoon.

The win is the Gaels first in OUA playoff action since 2007 when they defeated Carleton to claim the OUA Bronze Medal.

The Gaels will now be on the road for their quarter-final match and will take on either the Toronto Varsity Blues or the Carleton Ravens on Saturday. Stay tuned to www.gogaelsgo.com for up-to-date game information.

Ryerson 1, Trent 0 Final
OUA playoff

TORONTO - The Ryerson men's soccer team has advanced to the OUA quarter-finals after defeating the Trent Excalibur 1-0 at BMO Field Wednesday night. The teams were playing a rematch of Sunday's contest that saw the Rams win decisively. Wednesday night's affair was much closer on the scoreboard, but the Rams controlled possession for most of the evening.

"It's something special, we all came together today and I'm really happy for the guys. It's the first playoff home win in awhile, but we just have to take care of business next game and hopefully keep the streak alive," said Rams leading scorer Adrian Mancini.

With the Rams pushing forward for most of the game, the only thing that stood in their way was Excalibur keeper Josip Bosnjak. Bosnjak saved several breakaway and partial breakaway attempts to keep the game close. It wasn't till the 76th minute that midfielder Vince D'Elia snuck a shot underneath the sliding keeper to win it for Ryerson.

"I thought he made some great saves, but I thought we made him look good," Joseph said.

Trent was unable to generate their own chances, but almost capitalized on several Ryerson turnovers, giving the Rams a few scares. Excalibur forward Eli Adansi bent a ball just over the crossbar early in the first half.

BMO Field, the home of Toronto FC, served as the Rams home on Wednesday night. Due to field maintenance at Allan Lamport Stadium, Ryerson's home field, the players were treated to a game under the lights of a big-league stadium.

"It makes that playoff feel, that whole feeling of professionalism," Joseph said, adding that the team will not be playing there permanently.

The Rams now travel to Carleton to take on the second-seeded Ravens. Carleton earned a first-round bye, and will be well rested for their Saturday match. The last time the Rams advanced to the quarter-finals was in 2008, when the squad bowed out 4-0 to Carleton.
