Laurier 0, Western 0 Final
LONDON, Ont. - Despite being down to 10 men for almost half the game, the No. 2 nationally ranked Western Mustangs men's soccer team kept its undefeated record in tact with a 0-0 draw with Laurier.
Andrew Murdoch made two saves for his 10th shutout of the season, while Laurier's Marty Hooker got the surprise start in the Golden Hawks net - replacing Jarrett Humphreys after Laurier lost their last game 2-1 to Windsor.
Midfielder Hugo Hernandez of Laurier had several great chances in the game and nearly won the game in the closing seconds - his shot hit the football upright and many fans in attendance thought the shot had gone in. Seconds later Murdoch booted the ball on a goalkick and the referee's final whistle sounded.
In a seesaw battle early on, Laurier enjoyed a slight possession
advantage early in the game.
Western had a few early chances but could not convert.
Ian Meaghar earned the ball with solid pressure on a Laurier defender 15 minutes into the game and had a great chance but his shot from 24 yards out sailed well over the bar.
The physical play heated up midway through the half between the bitter rivals and eventually cards started to come out of the referee's pocket.
Right fullback John Morrissey was sent off eight minutes into the second half with his second yellow card of the game - resulting in a red card.
Laurier poured on the pressure from there.
Golden Hawk defender Zachary Faubert-Tétreault saw his shot from 30 yards out with 30 minutes left sail just wide.
Western nearly took the lead when Laurier defender Josh Moore nearly scored an own-goal with 20 minutes left after an arching cross from Western midfielder Maher Husseini from the far wing hit his foot and forced Hooker to make an timely save.
CIS leading scorer Niko Mavrikos tried to take advantage of a slip from a Laurier defender but Christopher Walker regained his footing and with help from Moore, they sandwiched him off the loose ball and cleared it out of harm's way.
Hernandez has three more great opportunities in the final 15
minutes. His first shot sailed low and wide, as Murdoch got his arm
to the shot, forcing the ball to loose momentum and curl just
wide.
Then Hernandez shot from 44 yards out on a free kick and it took a
funny bounce but was corralled by Murdoch with just over three
minutes remaining.
Western midfielder Eric Amato saw his free kick intended for pinching defender Alex Lewis just miss his head with just over a minute left on Western's only decent scoring chance of the second half.
With the tie, Laurier improves to 5-3-3 and remains in fourth place, while Western improves to 10-0-2. It was Western's first non-win at home this season.
