Trent 1, Laurentian 1 Final
SUDBURY, ON.- The Laurentian Voyageurs took on the Trent Excalibur this Sunday, earning a 1-1 in the process.
The first half saw a lot of back and forth play by both the Laurentian and Trent teams. It wasn't until the second half that the action began to pick up. Two minutes into the 2nd half, a foul committed in the box led to a penalty shot, in which Trent's Matt Pontin (Pefferlaw, On) capitalized to put his team in the lead 1-0. Just four minutes later, in the 51st minute, Cameron Brooks (Whitby, On) put the ball in the back of the net off of a cross from a free kick taken just over half to tie it up.
With moments left in extra time, the Voyageurs took a free kick from just outside the 18 yard box, leading to a glorious opportunity by Davor Alisic, (Charlottown, PEI) but in the end, turned out unsuccessful.
Coach Carlo Castrechino stated that during the game, "We got unlucky with the penalty shot against us, but those things happen. Then we battled back and tied it up, but we have to play better than that if we want to make the playoffs."
Up next for the Laurentian Voyageurs is when they take on Nipissing this Tuesday, October 5th. Follow your Laurentian Voyageurs online at www.luvoyageurs.com.

McGill 1, Sherbrooke 0 Final
SHERBROOKE - Yohann Capolungo scored in the 86th minute as the visiting McGill men's soccer team escaped with a 1-0 victory over Sherbrooke, Sunday.
Redmen 'keeper Jean-Lou Gosselin of Deux Montagnes, Que., registered one save to post his second shutout in six starts.
Capolungo converted a long volley pass from Thomas Lucas of Kirkland, Que., and fired the ball into the top right corner past goalkeeper Julien Masson-Lefebvre. It was the fourth marker of the season for Capolungo, a native of France who is tied for third in the QUSL goal-scoring race, one goal off the lead.
The Redmen dominated from start to finish, with a 15-5 edge in shots toward the net but couldn't solve Sherbrooke Masson-Lefebvre until the dying moments.
"Despite a vast number of opportunities to score, especially in the first half, we were holding our breath until the end," said David Simon, in his second season as head coach of the Redmen. "It was an overall team effort but Yohann was once again crucial in being the decisive factor. Also, Lucas played very hard and once again showed that he is a true leader on this team."
With five games remaining before playoffs, the Redmen improved to 4-3-0, jumping from fifth to second in the seven-team Quebec league standings.
Laval (7-0-0) leads the division by nine points, followed by McGill (4-3-0), Montreal (3-2-2), UQAM (3-3-1), UQTR (2-3-2), Sherbrooke (1-5-1) and last-place Concordia (1-5-0).
Sherbrooke will travels to Concordia on Oct. 15, while the Redmen are off until Oct. 17 when they play in Trois-Rivieres.

Toronto 0, Carleton 0 Final
OTTAWA - The Carleton University Ravens men's soccer team has extended its undefeated streak to eight games following a scoreless draw with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at Ravens' Field on Sunday.
The game started at a quick pace with Carleton getting the first quality scoring chance. Joey Kewin (London, Ont.) played a good ball to Sam McHugh (Russell, Ont.) but UofT goalkeeper John Smits (Mississauga, Ont.) came out to make the save. At the other end, Nordo Gooden (Toronto) had a great chance in the box, but Ravens keeper Karl Wasslen (Ottawa), who has not conceded a goal in eight straight games, was there to make the save. He continued to make big saves when called upon and showed why he was named the CIS BlackBerry Male Athlete of the Week.
The Ravens seemed to have more life in the second half and began to pressure the Varsity Blues defenders. Smits continued his solid goaltending off set plays though, keeping Carleton off the board. The Varsity Blues had four opportunities off corners late in the match, but the Ravens tightened up on defence and wouldn't give up a goal. One of the best plays of the half belonged to the Ravens as Peter Manginas (Belleville, Ont.) had a great run and played the ball to Josh Dewar-Morris (Ottawa). He fed it back to McHugh but his low drive went just wide and the game ended in a scoreless draw.
Carleton's record stands at 6-0-2 for top spot in the OUA East. Next up for the Ravens is Trent University as the Excalibur visit Ravens' Field on Oct. 9. Kickoff is at 3:15 p.m.

Brock 1, Guelph 1 Final
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons matched up against the Brock Badgers on Oct 3rd at the Alumni Stadium in Guelph. The game finished in a tie 1-1, after Robbie Murphy (Ottawa, ON) scored Guelph's first goal of the season – hopefully breaking the losing streak the team has suffered through. Brock later tied up the score with a goal from Anthony Frucci (Courtice, ON).
This brings the Gryphon's standings to 0-7-2 and the Badgers to 2-7-1.
The Gryphons began the game with a new rush of energy, reminiscent of their more-successful season last year. Murphy and Jurgen Koelher (Guelph, ON) drilled the Badger's end right from the start. Murphy almost got a goal only five minutes into the game but it struck the top post. Minutes later a scrimmage outside of the Badger net ensued and Gryphon offence had three consecutive shots on goal, but they were painfully not successful. It was enough to stir up some excitement in the stands.
Murphy once again hit the post of the net 20 minutes into the game but this time it reflected back at him and he rebounded a much-anticipated first goal of the season for the Gryphons. With Gryphon spirits high and a glimpse at the first possible win of the season, Brock was ready to fight back. With only minutes left in the first half Frucci snuck his way into the Guelph hot-zone and fired one into the net, tying up the match.
The second half was a struggle from both teams to try and take the lead. Much of the game was a ping-pong effect with plays going back and forth between both sides. Gryphon midfielder Brenden Springer (Burlington, ON) played a crucial role in carrying the transitions and propelled a lot of the attacks into Brock's end. Meanwhile, Badger midfielder Adrian Camelli (Niagara Falls, ON) consistently harassed Gryphon defence hoping for a goal.
During the last five minutes of the game, tensions rose and Brock's offence seemed to be gaining strength over Guelph. They had three official shots on net in only a matter of a few minutes. In the very last seconds of the game Murphy broke away from the crowd and had a chance to rake in the first win of the season, but the talented Badger goal-keep Ryan Toale (Brampton, ON) was able to shut it down. The match ended with high hopes for future Gryphon games, now that the dry streak for goals has ended.

Calgary 2, Lethbridge 0 Final
CALGARY - Izak Lawrence continued his scoring ways, potting both Dinos goals in a 2-0 triumph over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday afternoon.
The two-goal effort gives the second year forward the weekend hat-trick after scoring the lone goal against the Horns in Lethbridge on Saturday afternoon, bringing his season total to six, which is good for second in Canada West.
With seven saves on the day, Calgary goaltender J.P. Crescenzi held the opposition without a goal for the fourth straight game. The fifth year senior sports a terrific 0.75 GAA on the year, but insists that he has little to do with the shut-out streak.
"To be honest, I don't take much credit for the way we've been playing defensively the past couple of weeks," said Crescenzi. "Our strength has been team defence for a long time, and this year is no different, despite a stronger focus from the coaches on goal-scoring."
"Our back four is one of the best units in the conference," continued the goalkeeper. "They know each other really well and are always on the same page, which makes it very easy for me."
Netminder Colin Pattison made six saves in the loss for Lethbridge, who drops to 1-6-1 on the year, while the Dinos improve to 5-1-2 and take sole possession of second place behind the 7-1 Alberta Golden Bears.
Lawrence opened the scoring for the Dinos early in the first half, pounding a Christian Lorenzoni pass into Pattison. The fourth year goaltender deflected it, but could not control the path of the ball, watching helplessly from the turf as the shot cruised over the line.
The beneficiary of strong play-making from rookie forward Brett Howard, the second leading point-getter in Canada West would strike again just prior to halftime. Streaking down the right hand side of the pitch, Howard sent a low cross towards the 'Horns net after beating his defender, which Lawrence buried to make it 2-0.
The Dinos would get numerous superb chances throughout the match, but poor connection kept the score at a manageable 2-0 deficit for the Pronghorns. Both Howard and midfielder Brian Delaney in particular misfired on terrific opportunities, while forward Jeremy Jenkyns also missed on a late chance, sailing it high over the net.
Lethbridge was led by their seniors, Captain Steven Brown and midfielder Andrew Malcolm. Brown did well keeping the Dinos forwards honest over the afternoon, while Malcolm easily led the team in shots with four.
Both teams will take advantage of the bye-week over Thanksgiving weekend before going back on the road, where they will face the UBC Thunderbirds and the Trinity Western Spartans out in Vancouver.
