Windsor 0  UOIT 0  Final

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men’s soccer team could not find a way to stop striker Nikos Mavrikos as he scored all five Western goals in the Mustangs’ 5-0 victory over the Ridgebacks. Saturday’s game marked UOIT’s inaugural home game in the OUA.

Despite Mavrikos’ five goal performance, the celebration was not spoiled as fans piled into Vaso’s Field to take part in historical event that was held in conjunction with Sport’s Day in Canada. A special pre-game ceremony took place prior to kick off, celebrating the arrival of OUA soccer to the Durham Region.

“It was great to be a part of such a historical event,” said first year UOIT striker Justin Gordon. “I am sure it will be a really cool feeling to look back on this in twenty years knowing that I was part of something as special as this.”

The Ridgebacks knew their opponent on Saturday would be a tough challenge, as the nationally ranked Mustang’s entered the day with a prefect 5-0-0 record, outscoring their opponents 9-2.

Following the pre-game festivities, the game did not follow the script that the Ridgebacks had hoped as Mavrikos scored in the third minute of the game to give the Mustangs the early lead. After the opening goal, UOIT managed to settle down shaking off some of the early nerves as the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.

In the second half, Mavrikos stole the show for Western as he scored four more goals to lead the Mustangs to the 5-0 victory. The Ridgebacks had no answer for the OUA leading scorer as he recorded five goals on seven shots.

The Ridgebacks could not find a way to break through the Mustang’s defence all game long as Western recorded their fifth shutout in six games.

UOIT falls to 1-4-1 on the year and will host the Windsor Lancers (1-2-2) on Sunday, September 19 at 3:15 p.m. Western improves to 6-0-0.

Brock 3 Waterloo 1 Final

ST. CATHARINES - The Brock Badgers men's soccer team (2-2 OUA) scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat the visiting Waterloo Warriors 3-1 Sunday afternoon.

Waterloo opened the scoring early in the first half when Billy Bean beat the Badger defense to a ball in the 15th minute and put his shot into the back of the goal.  Both teams battled hard for the remainder of the half, with neither able to capitalize, sending Waterloo into half-time with a 1-0 lead.

The conditioning of the Badgers took over in the second half as they were able to wear down their opponent.  Nick Ianeri (Stoney Creek, Ont.) opened the scoring for Brock when a pass found him in the box and his strike sailed just under the cross-bar to even the score.  Ten minutes later Dan Baldassarro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) had a small break and was able to chip the ball over the Waterloo keeper to give the Badgers a lead.

Rookie forward Kosta Krajisnik (Niagara Falls, Ont.), picked up his third OUA goal in the game's 82nd minute to give the Badgers and insurance marker, and complete the scoring in the contest.

The Badgers were once again strong defensively denying numerous Waterloo chances late in the game.  Goalkeeper Ryan Toale(Brampton, Ont.) made four saves in the game to earn his second win of the season.  Defenders Bobby Turnbull (Brantford, Ont.),Aaron Walsh (Burlington, Ont.), Anthony Frucci (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Dan Valentini (Stoney Creek, Ont.) also did a great job of keeping the Warriors attack quiet and moving the ball upfield offensively.

The victory was the second of the weekend, and second of the season for the Badgers after they defeated the No. 10 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 Saturday.

The Badgers look to continue their streak Wednesday when they travel to McMaster to take on the Mauraders at 8 p.

McMaster 3 Guelph 0 Final

The Guelph Gryphon men’s team lost their fifth game of the regular season to the McMaster Marauders this afternoon (Sept 19) in Guelph. It brings the Marauder’s standing up to 3-2-1, and keeps the Gryphons at a disappointing 0-0-5.

During the first half the Gryphons dominated offensively, despite a Marauder goal by Chinomnso Nwamadi (Brampton, ON) 20 minutes into the game. The Gryphons had six shots on net while the Marauders had no official shots on net besides their only goal. Colin McMillan (Newmarket, ON) had a number of shots on net, many of them stopped by the Marauders relentless goal-keep Matt Grant (Brampton, ON).

Guelph’s offence showed some improvement from previous games this season during the first half. With help from Brendan Springer (Burlington, ON), much of the game was played in the Marauder’s end. The Gryphons were desperately fighting to not only even up this game, but break their losing streak of the regular season so far.  All that was needed was a goal, but a lack of communication seemed to stop them from breaking through.

The second half brought an upsetting finish for the Gryphons. 52 minutes into the game Marauder player Anthony Costa (Stoney Creek, ON) took a penalty shot set up right in front of Gryphon net. He fired a low, direct corner shot, and Gryphon goal keep Chad Paparoni (Burlington, ON) didn’t have a chance. Guelph continued to have a number of good opportunities on net, but they were unable to make anything of it.

The final blow came with only minutes left in the game, when Guelph defence crumbled forcing Paparoni to leave the goal, and McMaster’s Ivan Stojakovic (Stoney Creek, ON) gained control of the ball and took advantage of the open net. He took his time and fired a direct shot, sealing the Gryphon fate with a 3-0 loss.

Ryerson 1 Toronto 1 Final

The Ryerson men's soccer team ended a 21-match losing streak against the University of Toronto on Sunday, tying the Varsity Blues 1-1 at Varsity Centre.

The Rams [2-0-3] were looking to put the No. 2 ranked team in Canada away in the final 15 minutes in what would have been Ryerson's first win against the Varsity Blues [4-0-2] since a 3-1 victory Sept. 27, 1995.

What was billed as a cross-town battle between the top two teams in the OUA East division really intensified when  Toronto's Michael Brathwaite, was given a red card for exchanging words with the official.

With the Blues down a man, the Rams added insult to injury immediately, with Morgan scoring a header off the ensuing free kick.  Morgan was given a yellow card after knocking over the corner flag while celebrating his first goal of the campaign.

Midfielders Alex Braletic and Ashkan Mahboubi were also given yellow cards to round out the game's disciplinary actions, while Geoffrey Borgmann scored for the Blues just nine minutes in.

Goaltending was once again solid for Ryerson as Aaryon Gaeeni made some timely saves to keep the game close, but the Rams have not decided who their number one keeper will be.
