Laurentian Voyageurs earn 0-0 draw against Ryerson Rams
SUDBURY, ON. - The Laurentian Voyageurs men's soccer team would battle to a 0-0 draw in their season opener against the Ryerson Rams.
It was a chilly afternoon at the Laurentian Soccer Field on Saturday, September 4, which saw the Laurentian Voyageurs take on the Ryerson Rams. With each team having only a few chances, the game ended in a scoreless draw. Dave Szczepaniak (Sault. Ste. Marie On.) made four saves to secure the clean sheet for Laurentian. The Rams countered with Aaryon Gaeni (Toronto) who made just one save through 90 minutes.
The first half saw an early chance for the Voyageurs in the eighth minute as James Bond (Hamilton, On.) saw his free kick blocked by the wall before hitting his own rebound and missing the near post. The rest of the half was all Ryerson as the Rams had several chances missed by Jacob O'Conner (Ottawa). Ryerson's best chance of the first half came off a corner where O'Conner received the ball in the six-yard box and took a hard shot on goal, but a quick reflex save by Szczepaniak kept the ball from going into the net.
Seven minutes into the second half Ryerson's Vince D'elia (Vaughan, On.) would get a great chance but put a weak shot on net that was easily handled by Szczepaniak. Bond would get another chance for the Voyageurs a few minutes later on a slight breakaway as he attacked from the left wing, but Gaeni would cut down the angle, making a great save. As the cold set in, the Voyageurs dug down deep defensively and turned away the Rams attack late in the game holding Ryerson to a 0-0 draw.
"I'm happy we got the point today," said head coach Carlo Castrechino. "We hung on well in the second half with the wind in our faces and a lot of first year players got some good experience today. Tomorrow is going to be another tough test against U of T."
The Voyageurs will have a short rest as they will take on the number four ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday, September 5 at 2:15 p.m. following the Lady Vees at 12 p.m.. Follow your Voyageurs online at www.luvoyageurs.com.
