Exhibition: Mroczek, Mavrikos score to lift Western Mustangs to 2-2 draw
LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs
scored a pair of second-half goals to tie the University of
Montreal Carabins 2-2 on Aug. 21.
Montreal scored two goals in the first half. Damir Rosic blasted one of the cross bar and into the net in the 32nd minute and Colin Parenteau broke in on a break and beat Mustangs goalkeeper Andrew Murdoch with a low hard shot to the far post to extend the lead to 2-0 before the half-time break.
The Mustangs regrouped for the second half.
Western rookie Isaac Jacobsen from British Columbia outran a Montreal defender down the right flank and played a hard low cross that Pat Mroczek of St. Catharines, Ont., redirected into the bottom corner to cut the lead to one goal.
Then Western striker Niko Mavrikos from Victoria, B.C., who is returning to the team after a one-year abscence, volleyed a beautiful shot to the top corner, with his back to the Montreal goal to tie the game at 2-2.
"It was a superb effort," said Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco.
Western's next exhibition games against CIS schools are at the Old Four Tounament the weeknd of Aug. 29-30 against McGill, Queen's and UOIT. The Mustangs will also play Bryst Academy (U-21) of Toronto in exhibition on Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
