Gencarelli named Queen's head coach
Kingston, Ont. – Queen's Athletics & Recreation announced Friday that Chris Gencarelli has been named Head Coach of the men's soccer team for the 2010-11 season.
Gencarelli coached with Queen's as a playing-assistant in 2006-07 and then became the interim Head Coach after long-time head coach Al McVicar stepped down from his role in 2007-08. As interim coach, Gencarelli guided the Gaels to a 9-5-4 record and an OUA bronze medal finish.
He was a playing member of the Gaels from 2003-2006 while he attained his Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree from Queen's. During his playing career, he led the Gaels in scoring three of his four seasons and was named the team captain in 2006. He also earned OUA All-Star status during his final season with the Gaels in 2006.
"We are very excited to have Chris rejoin our program and believe he is an excellent candidate to help us succeed in the future," said Janean Sergeant, Manager of Interuniversity Sport Program. "He has demonstrated considerable enthusiasm to resume coaching responsibilities at Queen's and we are confident he will provide the leadership required for future athlete development and team success."
Since his interim coaching stint with the Gaels, he served as the Head Coach of the Cataraqui Clippers Men's U21 Competitive Regional Soccer Team and also assisted the Club's Technical Director. During this time, Gencarelli also focused his energy on completing his Bachelor of Education (Biology/Geography) and Masters of Education from Queen's as well as working in various roles within the education sector.
A NCCP Level 3 coach, Gencarelli will complete his Provincial Pre-B assessment course prior to the start of this season and will continue to pursue his certification until achieving his National B Licence.
