No. 1 Spartans settle for a 0-0 draw against Cascades
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University
men’s soccer team did everything they need to do in Saturday
night’s match with the University of the Fraser Valley
Cascades. Everything but score, as Spartans settled for a 0-0 draw.
The draw keeps the No. 1 Spartans unbeaten at 6-0-3, while
improving the Cascades to 2-7-1.
The Spartans dominated the play as they outshot the Cascades 17 to
five and if not for the outstanding play of rookie keeper Mark
Village (Abbotsford, B.C.), who made nine saves, TWU would have
walked away with the match. Villages, who was making his first
career start, made numerous saves on dangerous shots from the TWU
forwards, and often came charging out at the Spartan forwards, who
were often in alone, to neutralize the potential scoring
opportunity.
Nathan Pogue’s (Seaside, Ore.) seven shots led the Spartans,
who buzzed around the Cascades net all night lone but just
couldn’t get the final touch that they needed to secure the
win. While Ryan Lang led the Cascades with two shots, one of which
was on target.
The match could have really gone south for TWU if not for the fine
play by TWU keeper Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.), who made two saves,
in the final minutes of play. The Spartans keeper kept control of
the box as the Cascades looked to get some momentum late, but Fink
was able to corral some dangerous crosses in the final five
minutes, which would have given the Cascades the potential winning
goal.
Players of the Game were Village for the Cascades and Jordan
Whitehead (Surrey, B.C.) for the Spartans.
Next up for the Spartans is at the University of British Columbia
on Fri. Oct. 16.
