Western 5, York 1 Final Boxscore
TORONTO - The York University Lions men's hockey team could not
recover from an early three-goal deficit and went on to lose to the
No. 7 nationally ranked Western Mustangs by a score of 5-1 Thursday
night (Oct. 27) at Canlan Ice Sports.
David Blair (Ajax, Ont.) made 28 saves in the loss, including
several key saves in the third period that kept the Lions alive;
however, it was all for naught as his teammates could not solve
Western netminder Alain Valiquette, who picked up 20 saves for his
second win of the season.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-3-3 on the season and remain
fifth in the OUA West with five points, while the Mustangs improve
to 4-0-1 and take over top spot in the West with nine points. The
Lions have yet to record a win on home ice this season.
The Mustangs, after a slow start to the game, would heat up in the
latter stages of the first period, eventually outshooting the Lions
11-5 and recording a pair of goals.
They opened the scoring at 10:56 when Chris Corbeil (Oakville,
Ont.) moseyed his way around the back of the Lions' goal untouched
and slid a pass out front to a waiting Jason Furlong (London,
Ont.), who made no mistake, tapping a soft shot through Blair's
wickets.
Corbeil then went back to work at 17:12, delivering a nice cross
ice feed to Yashar Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.), who roofed a
shot over the glove of a sprawling Blair for the early insurance
marker.
In the early stages of the second period, the Mustangs went up 3-0
when Steve Reese (Dorchester, Ont.) found himself on the receiving
end of a fortuitous bounce out front of Blair's goal that resulted
in an easy tap
in.
The Lions would not roll over, however. Just over a minute after
the Reese tally, rookie centreman Troy Barss (Barrie, Ont.) cut the
deficit to 3-1 on his first goal of the season, a pretty little
wraparound that fooled Valiquette.
Unfortunately, before the Lions could finish celebrating Barss's
goal and begin another one of their infamous comebacks, the
Mustangs restored their three-goal lead on a howitzer by Tyler
Peters (Sarnia, Ont.) from the right sideboards that beat Blair
upstairs.
Not to be outdone, Matt Ashman (London, Ont.) put the Mustangs up
5-1 moments later with a point blast from almost the same spot as
Peters. Blair had little chance on the play, thanks in no small
part to his defenders, who failed to adequately challenge and
pressure the Mustangs' point man.
That is how things would stay for the remainder of regulation as
neither team would find the scoreboard again. The Mustangs played
some great shutdown defence in the final period, limiting the Lions
to just seven shots, en route to victory.
The Lions will be in action again on Friday (Oct. 28) when they
visit the Windsor Lancers (2-4-0) for another night cap. Puck drops
at 7:30pm.

Guelph 5, Brock 0 Final Boxscore
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons men’s team took on the
Brock Badgers tonight (Oct. 27th) in Guelph at the Gryphon Center.
The Badgers struggled to cut off the confident Gryphon attacks and
the game ended 5-0 in Guelph’s favour.
The Gryphons move to 2-4-0 on the season, while the Badgers fall to
3-4-0.
The Gryphons got their first goal of the game at 9:02 in the first
period when Andrew Merrett (Vernon, B.C) and Nathan Martine (Port
Colborne, ON) set up Matthew Lyall (Richmond Hill, ON) out front of
the Badger net on a power-play. Lyall lifted the puck straight over
Brock’s goalie Kurt Jory (Brandon, MB) and sent it to the
back of the net. The Badgers had many opportunities on
Guelph’s net, but Gryphon goalie Andrew Loverock (Elmvale,
ON) played a great game, saving 10 shots in the first period
alone.
In the second period the Gryphons added their second goal onto the
board. During another power-play, Ben Clarke (Halifax, NS) and
Lyall crossed to defenseman Patrick Campbell (Sauble Beach, ON) who
fired the shot from inside the blue line. The puck went right
through Jory’s legs, securing the Gryphons’ lead. The
rest of the period saw a lot of shots on net by both teams, but
with no success for either.
The Gryphons capitalized from the Badgers’ weaknesses in the
third period. At only 2:53 Edward Gale (Keswick, ON) set up
Campbell who fired his second goal of the game into the
Badgers’ net. This was soon followed at 10:06 with the
Gryphons’ fourth goal of the game from rookie Philip Teri
(Elora, ON) who was assisted by Barrett Brock (Leduc, AB) and
Michael McInerney (Toronto, ON). Teri came flying down the left
wing undeterred by Brock defense and shot it right through
Jory.
The fifth and final goal of the game came unassisted from Cameron
Odam (Stittsville, ON) after a breakaway down the rink gave him
full advantage. Brock fought hard in the last minutes trying to
repair the damage but couldn’t break through the Gryphon
lines. Guelph finished 5-0 and added a much-needed win onto their
standings tonight.
The Gryphons next play on Oct. 29th against the Western Mustangs in
London. The game begins at 7:30 pm.
