Exhibition: Axemen grab convincing win over U of T
Wolfville, NS - In their first meeting since the 1993 CIS championship game, where the Acadia defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 12-1 for their first of two National Championships, the Axemen posted a convincing 6-1 win over the V-Blues in the first of two exhibition games the Axemen face before the regular season begins next Friday on the road at UPEI and UNB.
The highlight of the game was fourth year forward and back-bencher Adam McIllwraith's two goal performance.
First year defenseman Michael Ward scored Acadia's first goal on a shot from the point that found it's way past Toronto's Russ Brown - the game's first shot recorded on net.
The Axemen continued with three more unanswered goals. First year forward Jay Fehr scored on a 3-on-2 break followed by McIllwraith's first of two goals to give Acadia a 3-0 first period lead.
First year winger Nathan Green opened the second period with a breakaway goal to give the Axemen a commanding 4-0 lead.
At the eight minute mark of the second frame, the Varsity Blues finally responded on a Robert Kay deflected shot that starting netminder Michael Chaisson tracked correctly until David Moody's skated guided shot into the net.
Chaisson and Kris Westblom shared goaltending duties, while Toronto's Brown and Garrett Sheehan did so likewise.
Acadia's Spencer Jezegou, who missed the conclusion of the first half of the regular season with a concussion, returned with a goal early in the third period. McIllwraith scored his second and final goal of the night at 10:42 of the final frame.
The Axemen outshot Toronto 26-18 in a game that recorded only four penalties - two a peice.
The Axemen will have three days off before their second of two Holiday Season exhibition games, as they prepare for the Saint Mary's Huskies to be played at Berwick's King's Mutual Centre Arena. The Toronto Varsity Blues will head to Halifax tomorrow night to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies at the Halifax Forum - 7pm start.
