Regina 2, Saskatchewan 1 Final
REGINA - Cody Gross' power-play goal midway through the third period gave the University of Regina's men's hockey team a 2-1 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies in a Canada West game on Saturday night at the new Co-Operators Centre.
The game was a low-scoring affair for the second straight night, with the two teams going through the first two periods scoreless. Saskatchewan's Brett Ward scored early in the third, but Terrance DeLaronde replied for the Cougars midway through the frame and set the table for the heroics by Gross.
Fifth-year goaltender Adam Ward made 38 saves for the Cougars, while rookie Ryan Holfeld stopped 23 shots in his first career start with Saskatchewan but was tagged with the loss.
Both teams now stand at 1-1-0 on the season.
The first two periods were scoreless in part due to solid Cougar penalty killing that saw them kill off six Saskatchewan power play opportunities. Brett Ward's goal came on a slap shot from the point which eluded his older brother for the first tally of the contest. DeLaronde's goal came off a rebound from a Neil Kodman shot, while Gross' goal was set up by a back-door pass by Matt Strueby.
DeLaronde added an assist on the Gross goal, giving him a two-point night.
The Cougars were 1-for-4 on the power play, while Saskatchewan was 0-for-7 with the man advantage.
The Cougars will travel to Winnipeg for a pair of games against Manitoba next weekend, while Saskatchewan will have a week off before playing the Cougars again on Oct. 15 and Oct. 16.

Alberta 4, Calgary 1 Final
EDMONTON - Another two-goal performance by a University of Alberta Golden Bear leads to another win, achieving the weekend series sweep against the Calgary Dinos with a 4-1 victory, Saturday night in Edmonton.
Former Kalamazoo Wing Derek Ryan (4th, Spokane, WA) did the double damage while Colin Joe (2nd, Edmonton) and Johnny Lazo (1st, Winnipeg) scored singles. Ryan finished with three points on the night while Kyle Fecho (4th, Hanna, AB) and Chad Klassen (5th, Saskatoon, SK) each picked up a couple of assists.
Jerrid Sauer (3rd, Medicine Hat, AB) scored his second goal in as many nights for the Dinos.
Continuing Friday evening's quick-strike attack, Alberta got on the board early when Klassen sent Ryan on a partial breakaway from centre ice, triple-deking Calgary starting netminder Kris Lazaruk (1st, Edmonton, AB) before backhanding the puck just inside the post at the 1:36 mark of the opening period.
Ryan doubled the lead just under seven minutes later when he got hold of a point-shot rebound in front and backhanded the puck through Lazaruk's five-hole.
The Calgary offense had a tough time catching up, getting their first shot at the 10:09 mark, but could not get any of their nine shots in the frame past freshman goalie Kurtis Mucha (1st, Sherwood Park, AB), starting in his first conference game.
Rookie rearguard Colton MacPherson (1st, Whitewood, SK) rang a point shot off the crossbar five minutes into the second period, yet it was an Alberta defender who next found the twine as Joe snuck in from the point and redirected a crisp Klassen pass into an empty net at the 12:48 mark.
Lazo would close out the scoring in the middle frame when he picked the top corner on Lazaruk's blocker side with 3:21 left to go.
Former Prince Albert Raider Dustin Butler (3rd, Calgary) entered the Dinos net for the final period and kept it empty, but Mucha only allowed a top-shelf Sauer slapshot on a two-man advantage to pass him by in the third, making 29 saves in the game.
The Golden Bears led the shot clock 37-30 on the night, but went 0-6 on the power-play. The Dinos, who had five opportunities in the third, finished at 1-8.
Both teams will take the "bye" next week during the Thanksgiving long weekend.
