Exhibition: Special teams make the difference for Redmen in 5-3 victory over Ravens
OTTAWA - The Carleton University Ravens men's hockey team dropped its first exhibition match up of the year Friday night, falling 5-3 to the McGill University Redmen.
The Ravens got into penalty trouble in the first, giving McGill a two-man advantage and the Redmen would make them pay. Francis Verreault-Paul (Mashteuiatsh, Que.) opened the scoring and Benoit Levesque added another powerplay goal to give McGill a 2-0 lead early in the opening frame.
The Ravens were still in the game though and battled back. Yves Bastien (Dowling, Ont.) cut McGill's lead in half when he beat Redmen goalie Hurbert Morin (St-Georges-de-Beauce, Que.) on a breakaway. McGill held on to its narrow 2-1 lead at the end of 20.
Marc-André Dorion (St. Hubert, Que.) helped the Redmen regain their two-goal lead in the second when he beat Ravens goalie Ryan Dube (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) on the man-advantage.
Carleton followed with a powerplay goal of its own, as Tyler Taylor (Kitchener, Ont.) put away his first as a Raven.
McGill wouldn't let the Ravens get any closer though, as Dorion tallied his second of the game and Christophe Longpre-Poirier (Longueuil, Que.) followed just seconds later, giving the Redmen a comfortable 5-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.
The Ravens put a dent into the Redmen lead when Jeff Hayes (Ottawa) notched a powerplay marker in the third, but it wasn't enough as McGill skated away with the 5-3 victory.
Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.) and Joey Manley (Ottawa) contributed two assists each in the game.
"We were outplayed in the second but regrouped and played well in the third and provided a solid effort," said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston.
The Ravens will look for redemption tomorrow night when they face the Redmen in the second game of the weekend doubleheader. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
Carleton will need to be more disciplined if they are going to come away victorious according to Johnston.
"Our penalty kill needs to be better," he said. "We need the same effort but a different outcome."
Ravens annual Varsity BBQ another great success
The sixth annual Ravens Varsity BBQ was a great success, raising
more than $800. The money raised will support the 2010-11 edition
of varsity council with its many charitable initiatives and
year-end banquet.
As part of the first ever Sports Day in Canada, a national celebration of sport at all levels, members of the Carleton community came out and enjoyed an hour of ice and some great food to support the 2010-11 Ravens student-athletes.
