CALGARY - The UNB Varsity Reds travelled to Alberta on Tuesday to take on the Calgary Dinos and Alberta Golden Bears in a three game exhibition series. In the first game of the series the V-Reds defeated the Dinos last night in an overwhelming 10-2 victory as nine different players scored for UNB.

CIS all-Canadian Luke Gallant (Bedford, NS) opened the scoring with a power-play goal for UNB just six minutes into the game with assists from Chris Culligan and Ben Shutron. Third year net-minder Travis Fullerton (Riverview, NB) backstopped UNB to five unanswered goals before switching with team mate Derek Yeomans (St. Albert, AB) in the second period.

Other goal scorers in the first period were third year forward Dion Campbell (Melville, SK) and third year defenseman Bretton Stamler (Edmonton, AB). Shots on goal for the period were UNB 14 Calgary 9.

Sophomore Taylor Procyshen (Emerald Park, SK) opened the scoring for UNB nine minutes into the second period and was quickly followed by another from CIS Player of the Year Hunter Tremblay (Timmins, ON). Just thirteen seconds later hometown boy Curtis Senko of the Dinos put one past Yeomans to bring the score to 5-1. With a final second period goal from UNB's Lachlan MacIntosh (Perth Andover, NB) the period ended with a score of 6-1 and 11-4 shots on goal.

Calgary opened the scoring in the third as Brock Nixon (Russell, MN) put one past the UNB pipes just 1:14 into the period. That goal did not go unanswered as UNB scored four more times with goals from Matt Filler (Durham, NS), Daine Todd (Stettler, AB), Taylor Procyshen and Spencer Corcoran (Summerside, PE). Shots on goal for the period were 14-3.

UNB had 39 shots in the game and Calgary replied with 16. UNB goaltender Fullerton stopped all 11 shots he faced while Yeomans made three saves on five shots. Calgary's Dustin Butler made 17 saves on 22 shots while teammate Nathan Deobald stopped 12 of 17. UNB was 4 for 12 on the power play while Calgary scored once out of their eight extra man opportunities. The final score was UNB 10 – Calgary 2.

It's been a while since UNB played Calgary – in fact the last time was on December 30, 2003 when the V-Reds defeated the Dinos 1-0 at Lakehead University's holiday tournament, the Bell Varsity Cup.

Head Coach Gardiner MacDougall had this to say about his team's performance. "We were fortunate to get a good solid start to our game by establishing our work ethic and our habits. We had the opportunity to get positive contributions from all four of our lines, our D along with solid play from our goalies, and that has to be a key foundation of our team this season."

The Varsity Reds will face off against the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday at 7:00 pm at the Clare Drake arena and then return to the Father David Baver rink for a rematch with the Dinos on Saturday night.
