McGill grad Urquhart signs with Habs farm team in Hamilton
MONTREAL - David Urquhart, a former all-Canadian defenceman with the McGill University Redmen, has signed a one-year contract with American Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs, an affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
A 25-year-old native of Thorold, Ont., Urquhart had spent most of the past two years in the AHL, patrolling the blue-line for the Hartford Wolf Pack. He is the eighth McGill player to skate in the AHL and the third to play for the Bulldogs. Two other McGill hockey grads, Guy Boucher and Martin Raymond, both coached in Hamilton last year. Raymond is still under contract to return in Hamilton but Boucher was recently appointed head coach of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.
Urquhart, a 6-foot, 190-pound rearguard scored six goals and 18 points in 107 career games with 79 penalty minutes for Hartford. He also had a pair of goals and 13 assists in 20 career games with Charlotte in the East Coast Hockey League.
A three-time all-star at McGill, where he earned a commerce degree in 2008, Urquhart potted 23 goals and 107 points, along with 330 penalty minutes in 147 career games overall, during his four seasons with the Redmen. He is tied with Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock as the sixth-highest point-scoring defenceman in McGill history, trailing Gilles Hudon (152 points), Martin Routhier (135), David Bahl (110), Bryan Larkin (109) and Luc Latulippe (109).
Urquhart was also a two-time conference representative for the CIS Randy Gregg trophy, for combining hockey ability with academics and citizenship. He earned Academic All-Canadian honours and receiving the University's Gretta Chambers award for leadership. He captained the Redmen to the Ontario University Athletics conference championship in 2008. It marked McGill's first Queen's Cup league title since 1946.
Urquhart joined the Redmen in 2004 out of Junior B in Welland, Ont., and eventually made his way to the AHL, joining a list of former McGill players that includes Daniel Jacob (2004-05), Greg Davis (2001-03), Mathieu Darche (2000-2010), Pierre Gendron (1997-98), Jim Webster (1980-81), Dan Porteous (1947-50) and Johnny Peirson (1946-48).
