No. 1 UNB wins 23rd straight game in 5-2 win over No. 4 Acadia
FREDERICTON – In the battle between the top two teams in
the AUS, the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds overcame a
first period deficit to score four unanswered goals and defeat the
Acadia Axemen 5-2. For the second game in a row it was a sell-out
crowd at the Aitken University Centre as 3812 fans, many of them
elementary school children in the stands for the annual District 18
Night, watched the V-Reds run their undefeated streak to 23
games.
The Acadia Axemen showed more jump than the V-Reds in the first
period, and were rewarded at 5:42 when Scott Tregunna (Mt. Forest,
ON) flipped it over Derek Yeoman's (St. Albert, AB) pad. On the
power-play at 12:47 Hunter Tremblay (Timmins, ON) scored a
highlight goal on the rush as he flipped the puck to himself at the
Acadia blue line, zigzagged his way into the slot and beat Kris
Westblom (Meadow Lake, SK) with a snapshot to tie the game at
12:47. Acadia got their lead back at 17:21 when Jonathan Laberge
(Ste-Foy, QC) took advantage of a scramble in front of the UNB net
to score. Shots in the first period were ten apiece.
The second period was dominated by the Varsity Reds and Acadia only
managed five shots on net. UNB’s Kyle Bailey (Ponoka, AB) and
Jonathan Harty (Oromocto, NB) both scored for UNB. Shots on goal
for the second period were UNB 12, Acadia 5.
Early in the third period point man Alex Aldred (St. Albert, AB)
fired a hard shot-pass through the slot to fellow UNB defenceman
Bretton Stamler (Edmonton, AB) who had rushed in off the left point
in time to deflect the puck past Westblom. With about 90 second to
go the Axemen pulled their goalie, but Hunter Tremblay quickly got
to a loose puck, stickhandled through two Acadia defencemen and
fired the puck into the empty net to salt away the win. Acadia did
have a power play in the last minute of the game, but couldn't
generate many scoring chances.
The final score was 5-2 with UNB outshooting Acadia 35-20. The
player of the game was UNB goalie Derek Yeomans.
Next up for the Varsity Reds is the annual Mark Jeffrey Memorial
Game on Wednesday, February 3rd when they host the
Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus.
