OUA roundup: Lakehead's Moir earns shutout, No. 8 'Wolves beat No. 3 Mustangs

THUNDER BAY, Ont. - Kyle Moir earned his second straight shutout of a ranked opponent as the No. 8 Lakehead Thunderwolves men's hockey team dispatched the No. 3 Western Mustangs 4-0 Friday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont. The junior out of Calgary made 33 stops on the night following up on his shutout last weekend at Laurier.

With the win Lakehead (16-5-2) draws within two points of Western (18-5-0) for first place in the OUA West Division.

Andy Hyvarinen scored the winner just 1:11 into the first period while Matt Caria, Pierre-Marc Guilbault and Ryan McDonald also tallied for the 'Wolves. Caria added an assist for a multi-point night and extended his point-scoring streak to seven conference games to open his CIS career with the Thunderwolves. Andy Zulyniak had two assists.

While Moir was a perfect 33-of-33 on the shots he faced, Western goalie Keyvan Hunt made a solid 38 saves on 42, including an absolute robbery of McDonald early in the third as he extended his glove across the crease to stop the backhand on the doorstep. 

A season-high 3,495 fans witnessed the contest between the heated West Division rivals that sets up a crucial Saturday night battle at the Gardens. Should Lakehead win in regulation they would tie the Mustangs for first in the division. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

OTTAWA 3, UQTR 2, SO

At Ottawa, Riley Whitlock stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout as the Gee-Gees (6-15-1) upset the No. 5 UQTR Patriotes (17-3-2) by a 3-2 count.

Whitlock was busy all night, stopping 51 of 53 shots he faced during regulation and overtime.

The Gee-Gees jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Paul Forster and Simren Sandhu scored for Ottawa. The Patriotes came back on a power play goal by Alexandre Blais and a Jean-Sebastien Breton marker.

The teams battled through a scoreless third period and overtime before Sandhu scored the shootout winner.

CARLETON 4, MCGILL 2

At Carleton, the Ravens (13-7-3) scored four unanswered goals to defeat the No. 6 McGill Redmen 4-2.

The Redmen (17-5-0) built a 2-0 lead in the first period as Yan Turcotte and Jean-Francois Boisvert knocked rubber past Carleton netminder Alexander Archibald. The Ravens got one back before the end of the period as Brandon MacLean scored his first of two goals in the proceedings.

After no goals were scored in the second period, the Ravens poured it on in the third. Ryan Berard, Mike Byrd and MacLean all scored to lift the Ravens to victory.

Archibald made 37 saves in the victory.

WATERLOO 4, BROCK 0

At Waterloo, the No. 10 Warriors (16-6-1) were the only CIS Top 10 OUA team to win on Friday, blanking the Brock Badgers 4-0.

Four different scorers hit pay dirt for the Warriors, including Jarrett Schnurr, Kurt Thorner, Mark Hartman and Shane Hart.

Waterloo goaltender Keaton Hartigan stopped all 19 shots he faced for the shutout. It marked the second straight shutout loss for the Badgers (9-15-1).

QUEEN'S 4, TORONTO 3

At Toronto, the Queen's Gaels (13-10-1) edged the Varsity Blues 4-3.

Scott Kenway scored the winning goal for the Gaels with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

Payton Liske scored a pair of goals for Queen's, his 15th and 16th of the season. Teammate Joey Derochie also scored his 14th of the OUA campaign.

Goal scorers for Toronto included Joe Rand, Joel Lenius and Byron Elliott. The Varsity Blues drop to 12-8-3 on the season.

NIPISSING 6, RMC 1

At RMC, the Nipissing Lakers (10-13-1) have strung two straight wins after defeating the Paladins 6-1.

The Lakers had a well-balanced attack with six different snipers putting points on the scoreboard. This included Brandon Happeney, Broadie Beard, Nathan Breukelman, Josh McKinnon, Justin Villeneuve and Tyler Riel.

Mitchell Smith scored RMC's lone marker. Nipissing goaltender Billy Stone made 30 of 31 stops for the win. The Paladins drop to 5-15-3 on the season.

WINDSOR 6, UOIT 1

At UOIT, the Windsor Lancers (9-10-4) defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 6-1.

Mark Thorburn and Brett Oliphant scored two goals each for the Lancers, with Oliphant earning four total points. Kyle Tront and Scott Gillis also scored for Windsor.

UOIT's Dustin Turner ended Windsor goaltender Jim Watt's shutout bid 6:56 into the third period. Watt stopped 15 shots for the win. UOIT is now 8-14-1 on the season.
