CIS Mens Hockey Top 10 (#10): No. 1 UNB moves to 19-0, set to face U of Maine
OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion New
Brunswick Varsity Reds top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for
the tenth time in as many media polls this year.
The Varsity Reds, who were a unanimous choice at No. 1 for the
ninth straight week thanks to 17 first-place votes, improved to
19-0 in conference play over the weekend with a pair of key road
wins over Top-10 opponents. UNB kicked off a two-game set in Nova
Scotia with a 6-1 domination of the No. 9 Saint Mary’s
Huskies (10-5-4) Friday night before edging the No. 4 Acadia Axemen
(13-4-1) 2-1 on Saturday.
The V-Reds, who remain on pace to improve on their AUS-record
26-1-1 mark from 2007-08, stay on the road this week as they are
set to face the University of Maine Black Bears in non-conference
action on Tuesday evening in Orono, ME, before resuming AUS play at
Moncton (4-13-1) on Friday and at St. Thomas (6-10-2) on
Saturday.
UNB has a 3-0 exhibition record this year against NCAA Hockey East
teams including wins over Providence, Massachusetts and Vermont.
Maine is ranked 20th in the latest USCHO.com poll.
Following UNB in this week’s CIS Top 10 are No. 2 Alberta
(16-1-1), No. 3 Western Ontario (17-3-0), Acadia, No. 5 McGill
(16-3-0) and No. 6 UQTR (14-3-1), who all hold on to their previous
positions.
Wilfrid Laurier (14-4-2) moves up two spots to No. 7, Manitoba
(11-5-2) stays put at No. 8, Saint Mary’s is down two, while
Lakehead (13-5-2) returns to No. 10 after falling out of the
national rankings last week.
Canada West-leading Alberta is second in the nation for the tenth
consecutive week. The Golden Bears, fresh off a bye, return to the
ice this weekend for a doubleheader in Saskatoon against archrival
Saskatchewan (10-7-1), which was ranked 10th nationally last
Tuesday.
OUA West-leading Western saw its 16-game regular season winning
streak come to an end last Friday when it was upset 6-4 by UOIT
(8-11-1), but the Mustangs rebounded on Saturday with a 4-2 victory
over York (10-9-1) that marked the 250th win of head coach Clarke
Singer’s CIS career (regular season and playoffs).
No. 4 Acadia defeated UPEI (8-9-2) 2-1 last Friday before losing by
one goal to UNB.
No. 5 McGill routed Concordia (4-13-2) 12-3 last Tuesday and edged
archrival UQTR 2-1 on Friday, before dropping a 3-1 decision to
upstart Carleton (12-6-2) on Saturday.
The 2-1 loss to McGill was No. 6 UQTR’s lone outing of the
past week.
No. 7 Laurier doubled Brock (8-12-1) 4-2 in its only duel of the
last seven days.
No. 8 Manitoba split a two-game series against UBC (7-12-1), losing
the opener 3-0 before rebounding with a 5-2 win.
No. 9 Saint Mary’s went 0-2 over the weekend. The Huskies
were defeated 4-3 by UPEI 24 hours after their lopsided loss to
UNB.
No. 10 Lakehead swept Windsor (7-10-3) 8-6 and 8-2.
