CIS Mens Hockey Top 10 (#7): No. 1 V-Reds aim for 15-0 mark at the break
OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion New
Brunswick Varsity Reds top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for
the seventh time in as many media polls this fall.
The V-Reds, who were a unanimous choice at No. 1 for the sixth
straight week thanks to 18 first-place votes, improved to 13-0 in
conference play over the past weekend with a 7-5 victory over
Moncton and a 3-2 overtime win over St. Thomas. It marked the third
time this fall UNB needed to work extra time to keep its
unblemished record, including a pair of OT duels against their
cross-town rivals from STU.
Back in 2007-08, when they set a number of AUS records en route to
a remarkable 26-1-1 conference mark, the V-Reds kicked off the
regular season with 11 consecutive victories. Since the start of
that memorable 2007-08 campaign, UNB is 60-5-4 in regular-season
action for a .899 winning percentage.
UNB has two games remaining before the December break. The
defending champs host UPEI (6-6-2) on Friday and No. 9 Saint
Mary’s (8-3-2) on Sunday as part of a busy 19-game final week
of CIS men’s hockey.
Following UNB in this week’s media poll are No. 2 Alberta
(14-1-1), No. 3 Western Ontario (13-2-0), No. 4 Acadia (11-3-0),
No. 5 UQTR (13-2-0), No. 6 McGill (10-2-0), No. 7 Manitoba (9-3-2),
No. 8 Lakehead (11-3-2), Saint Mary’s and No. 10 Wilfrid
Laurier (10-4-1).
The Canada West-leading Golden Bears are second in the nation for
the seventh straight week following a two-game sweep of provincial
rival Lethbridge, 6-2 and 4-3 in overtime.
The OUA West-leading Mustangs remain at No. 3 for the second week
in a row after they edged No. 10 Laurier 5-4 and beat Waterloo
5-3.
The biggest winners in the new poll are the Axemen, who move up
three spots to reach their best ranking of the campaign following a
4-3 OT win over No. 9 Saint Mary’s and a 4-3 defeat of
StFX.
Rounding out the Top 5 is perennial contender UQTR. The Patriotes
drop one position in the media poll despite a 2-0 week that saw
them edge Toronto 4-3 in OT and blank RMC 5-0.
