CIS mens hockey Top 10 (#6): No. 1 V-Reds improve to 11-0
OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion New
Brunswick Varsity Reds top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for
the sixth time in as many media polls this fall.
The V-Reds, who were a unanimous choice at No. 1 for the fifth
straight week thanks to 17 first-place votes, improved to 11-0 in
conference play with a 2-0 shutout of UPEI (5-5-2) last Friday in
their lone outing of the past week.
Back in 2007-08, when they set a number of AUS records en route to
a remarkable 26-1-1 mark, the V-Reds also started the regular
season with 11 consecutive victories before dropping a 5-4 shootout
decision to the Moncton Aigles Bleus, the team they are set to
visit on Friday night when they go for win number 12. The defending
CIS champs also host cross-town rival St. Thomas on Saturday.
Following UNB in this week’s media poll are No. 2 Alberta
(12-1-1), No. 3 Western Ontario (11-2-0), No. 4 UQTR (11-2-0), No.
5 McGill (8-1-0), No. 6 Manitoba (9-3-2), No. 7 Acadia (9-3-0), No.
8 Saint Mary’s (7-3-1), No. 9 Wilfrid Laurier (9-3-1) and No.
10 Lakehead (9-3-2).
The Canada West-leading Golden Bears are second in the nation for
the sixth straight week following a two-game sweep of provincial
rival Calgary, 7-2 and 6-4.
The OUA West-leading Mustangs move up one spot to reach their best
ranking of the campaign after a successful trip to the
nation’s capital that saw them outscore Ottawa 6-4 and defeat
Carleton 5-1.
The biggest losers in the new Top 10 are the No. 8 Huskies, who
drop five positions following a pair of one-goal setbacks, 3-2 to
StFX and 2-1 in overtime against UPEI.
