CIS Mens Hockey Top 10 (#5): Perfect 10 for No. 1 V-Reds
OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion New
Brunswick Varsity Reds top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for
the fifth time in as many media polls this fall.
No. 1 UNB improved to 10-0 in conference play over the past weekend
with a 9-3 win over StFX and a 7-1 defeat of Dalhousie. The V-Reds,
who received all 17 available first-place votes in the poll, have
been simply dominant since the start of the regular season, with
six wins coming by at least a four-goal margin. The defending
champs have tallied at least seven goals in six of 10 outings and
have outscored their AUS rivals by a 3-1 ratio overall (63-21).
Back in 2007-08, when they set a number of AUS records en route to
an amazing 26-1-1 mark, the V-Reds started conference play with 11
straight victories before dropping a 5-4 shootout decision to the
Moncton Aigles Bleus. UNB goes for win number 11 Friday against
UPEI and, potentially, number 12 on November 27… against
Moncton.
Following UNB in this week’s media poll are No. 2 Alberta
(10-1-1), No. 3 Saint Mary’s (7-2-0), No. 4 Western Ontario
(9-2-0), No. 5 UQTR (9-1-0), No. 6 Manitoba (8-3-1), No. 7 McGill
(7-1-0), No. 8 Lakehead (8-3-1), No. 9 Acadia (7-3-0) and No. 10
Wilfrid Laurier (7-3-1).
UNB is now the only undefeated team in the nation following losses
by OUA East leaders UQTR and McGill in their first duels of the
regular season against OUA West opponents. UQTR drops two spots in
the new national rankings, while McGill loses three positions.
Both teams rebounded well on Saturday however after opening the
weekend on a losing note. The Patriotes defeated Laurier 5-3 after
being dropped 5-1 by Western, while the Redmen responded to an 8-4
setback against Laurier with a 6-4 victory over Waterloo.
The big winners in the new poll are No. 3 Saint Mary’s, up
from No. 5 following a 5-1 win over St. Thomas and a 11-0
domination of Moncton, as well as No. 4 Western, up three spots
following its win over previously undefeated UQTR and a 10-4
victory over Concordia.
Acadia is ranked for the first time in 2009-10 after outscoring
Moncton 4-1 and St. Thomas 5-1.
