OUA men's hockey roundup: Hawks upset Redmen in battle of national ranked teams
WATERLOO, Ont. - The No. 9 nationally-ranked Wilfrid Laurier
Golden Hawks (7-3) got the better of No. 4-ranked McGill (7-1) to
the tune of 8-4, handing the visitors their first loss of the
season.
The purple and gold's Clinton Pettapiece
(Christina Lake, B.C.) opened the scoring midway through the first
period and Craig Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.)
followed that up less than a minute later to give the home team a
2-0 advantage.
Hawk captain Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) put
Laurier ahead by three with a goal just 15 seconds into the second
period and Chad Kennedy (Mississauga, Ont.) scored a shorthanded
marker at 1:54 to really set the visitors on their heels.
The Redmen fought back, however, with goals from Marc-Andre
Daneau (Aston Jonction, Que.) and rookie
Jean-Francois Boisvert (Mirabel, Que.). But
Mike Gauthier (North Vancouver, B.C.) replied for
the Hawks to give the home team a 5-2 lead by the end of the second
frame.
WLU added three more goals in the final stanza to put the Hawks
ahead 8-2 before the Redmen countered with markers from
Marc-Andre Dorion (St. Hubert, Que.) and
Boisvert's second of the night with less than three minutes
remaining.
QUEEN'S 5, YORK 3
At York, Joey Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.) and
Ben Munroe (Kingston, Ont.) scored third period
goals to lead the Queen's Gaels (5-4) to a 5-3 win over the Lions
(5-5) on Friday night in Toronto.
After the Gaels fell behind 1-0 early in the first, the team
quickly responded two minutes later thanks to a power play goal
from Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.). Clinton McCullough
(Aurora, Ont.) gave the Gaels the lead shortly thereafter with his
second goal of the season.
Queen's would carry their momentum over to the second period as
Jeffrey Johnstone (Etobicoke, Ont.) scored just
1:18 into the frame.
York managed to find the back of the net twice in the second
period.
The trend of early period goals continued in the final frame as
Derochie scored his second of the game to put the Gaels in front.
Munroe would seal the victory with a shorthanded goal late in the
period to give Queen's their fourth win of the year.
WATERLOO 2, CONCORDIA 0
At Waterloo, the No. 7 Warriors (7-4) shutout the Concordia
Stingers (1-10) by a 2-0 score on Friday.
Veteran Shane Hart (Guelph, Ont.) opened the
scoring with a power play goal midway through the first period.
Assisting on the play were Steve Whitely
(Petrolia, Ont.) and Aaron Lewicki (Mississauga,
Ont.).
Hart's goal would stand as the game's only tally until the third
period when Kyle Schwende (Waterloo, Ont.) found
the back of the net, sealing the win for the Warriors.
UOIT 4, RMC 3
At UOIT, Scott Baker's overtime marker lifted the Ridgebacks (4-5)
to a 4-3 win over the RMC Paladins (3-5). For UOIT, it was the
team's third consecutive conference victory, which marks the
Ridgebacks longest winning streak in the program's three-year
history.
Brent Varty (Oshawa, Ont.) opened up scoring for
UOIT followed up by goals from teammates Derrick
Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) and Mike Noyes
(Lucan, Ont.).
After a scoreless second period, RMC would tie the up the game up
at 3-3 as Matthew Pinder (Calgary) scored his
third goal of the night, recording the hat trick.
In overtime, Baker (Mactiar, Ont.) scored the winner 2:52 into the
extra frame on a deflection off a Jeff Barletta
(Port Stanley, Ont.) point shot to give UOIT the victory.
Baker now has four points in the past two games, and has three
goals in his freshman season with the Ridgebacks.
WINDSOR 8, RYERSON 4
At Windsor, the Lancers (3-6), led by rookie defenceman
Christian Steingraber's first ever hat trick,
defeated the Ryerson Rams (5-6) by an 8-4 score on Friday night at
Windsor Arena.
Windsor got off to a strong start as forward Mark
Thorburn (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) scored on a power play
at 9:25 of the first period to give the home team the 1-0 lead.
In the second period, the two teams traded a pair of goals as
Matt McCready (Kingsville, Ont.) set up
Brett Oliphant (Woodslee, Ont.) and Josh
Gaynor (Goderich, Ont.) who both found the back of the
net.
With a 3-2 lead after two periods, the Lancers exploded for five
goals in the third period to break the game wide open.
The scoring outburst was led by rookie defenseman Christian
Steingraber who recorded a third period hat trick to lead his team
to victory.
The native of Oregon, Ohio recorded his three markers in a
five-minute span in the third as Windsor cruised to the 8-4
victory.
Kyle Tront (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Brett
Vandehogen (Chatham, Ont.) would each add a goal in the
third period to round out the scoring.
LAKEHEAD 7, TORONTO 6
At Lakehead, Brock McPherson and the No. 10
Thunderwolves power play unit were on fire Friday night as Lakehead
(8-3) edged the Toronto Varsity Blues (5-6) by a 7-6 score at the
Fort William Gardens.
McPherson (Brampton, Ont.) scored four goals, including three on
the man advantage while teammate Scott Dobben
(Drayton, Ont.) tallied the Wolves other two power play markers
while adding two assists.
Mark Soares (Burnaby, B.C.) scored Lakehead's
other goal while Andy Zulyniak (Winnipeg) and
Dan Speer (Thunder Bay, Ont.) each had three
assists.
Robert Kay (Orono, Ont.) had a hat-trick of his
own to lead Toronto while Matt Walters (Winnipeg),
Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) and
Bryden Teich (Toronto) also scored for the
visitors.
WESTERN 5, UQTR 1
At Western, the No. 7 Mustangs key forward line consisting of
Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.), Keaton
Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.), and Kevin
Baker (Georgetown, Ont.) contributed four of the five
Western goals as the Western Mustangs (9-2) defeated the No. 3 UQTR
Patriotes (9-1) by a 5-1 score at Thompson Arena.
Snow claimed two goals while Baker, Turkiewicz, and captain
Luc Martin (St. Thomas, Ont.) each earned one
goal. Etienne Bellavance-Martin (St-Jean Chrysostome, Que.) scored
the only Patriotes goal.
BROCK 2, NIPISSING 1
At Brock, the Badgers (6-4) held on in the late minutes against the
No. 8 Nipissing Lakers (6-4) to secure the win in a tight, physical
affair.
The Lakers notched the first goal of the game on an early rush, as
Matt Lahey snapped a quick shot past Mark
Yetman (Mt. Pearl, Nfld.) only 3:37 into the first period
for the 1-0 lead.
Dan Dooley (Saint John, N.B.) knotted it up at one
goal a piece with less than three minutes remaining in the first
period, using his excellent work effort to record his second goal
of the season.
Entering the third period tied at 1-1, the Badgers showed
determination bombarding the Lakers' goaltender with a barrage of
shots early in the period. Josh Schram (Paris,
Ont.) deflected the power play point shot past into the Lakers' net
to pull ahead by one goal with 7:51 remaining in regulation
play.
Yetman turned away 33 of 34 shots in the game including some
spectacular sprawling pad saves in the final minute of the game,
recording his fifth win of the season.
YORK 5, RMC 0
At York, the Lions (5-5-1) faced off against the RMC Paladins
(3-5-2) on Saturday at Canlan Ice Sports York Arena. The Lions
handily claimed the game with a 5-0 win.
The first goal of the game came late in the period during a power
play as Tyler Harrison (Whitby, Ont.) netted his
second goal of the season with an assist from Kyle
Searle (Newtonville, Ont.).
Returning from the first intermission, the Lions renewed their
attack with another four unanswered goals throughout the period. In
the opening two minutes of play, the Paladins (3-5-2) gave way to
the Lions as Nathaniel Brooks (Richmond Hill,
Ont.) found the back of the net.
The third goal of the game came at the 7:20 mark as Harrison set up
rookie Jesse Messier (Keswick, Ont.) at the point
to fire through a screen and find the top corner of the net. The
Lions continued to increase the pressure on the Paladins with a
breakaway goal by Brooks.
Three minutes later, Matt Thomson (Kitchener,
Ont.) netted the final goal of the game to set the Lions ahead
5-0.
RYERSON 4, WINDSOR 3
At Windsor, the Ryerson Rams (5-6-0) earned a 4-3 shootout victory
over the Windsor Lancers (3-6-1) on Saturday afternoon in
Windsor.
The Rams controlled the game for the first two periods, out
shooting Windsor 31-14 and building a 3-1 lead. The third frame was
a different story as the Lancers out shot Ryerson 19-3 and scored
twice to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless five minute
overtime period, the Rams would prevail in the shootout.
Cory Konecny (Stoney Point, Ont.), Josh
McNair (Sudbury, Ont.) and Marcus Booth
(Orillia, Ont.) scored for Ryerson, while Alex
Sharpe (Mt. Forest, Ont.) was the only player on either
team to find the back of the net in the shootout. Goaltender
Louie George (Waterloo, Ont.) stopped 34 of 37
shots for the victory.
Brett Oliphant (Woodslee, Ont.) with two and
Kyle Tront (Thunder Bay, Ont.) with a single had
the goals for Windsor.
GUELPH 6, NIPISSING 2
At Guelph, the Gryphons (4-5) did not disappoint the over 300 fans
that showed up at the Gryphon Centre on Saturday, defeating the
Nipissing Lakers (6-5) in a whopping 6-2 victory.
Derek Knowles (Vanderhoof, B.C.) and Kris
Belan (Florence, Ont.) each netted two for the Gryphons in
the victory, while Belan remained an unstoppable force in the
physical game as well, dealing out more than his fair share of
bone-crushing hits on the Lakers.
Other major contributors for the Gryphons included Ed
Gale (Keswick, Ont.) who picked up three assists,
Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and
Nathan Martine (Port Colborne, Ont.) who each
added a goal, and Tim Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) who
chipped in two assists.
WESTERN 10, CONCORDIA 4
At Western, assistant captain Kyle Lamb (Port
Coquitlam, B.C.) notched two goals as the Mustangs (9-2) defeated
the Concordia Stingers (1-10) 10-4 on Saturday at Thompson
Arena.
Remaining Western goals were scored by Yashar
Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.), Geoff
Killing (Embro, Ont.), Jason Furlong
(London, Ont.), Kevin Baker (Georgetown, Ont.),
Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.), Brock
Turner (Brandon, Man.), Patrick Ouellet
(Baie-Comeau, Que.), and Aaron Snow (Windsor,
Ont.).
Stinger goals were claimed by Marc- Andre Rizk
(Montreal), Nicolas Sciangula (Montreal),
Renaud Des Alliers (Sorel-Tracy, Que.), and
Matthew David (Montreal).
MCGILL 6, WATERLOO 4
At Waterloo, sophomore centre Francis
Verreault-Paul (Mashteviatsh, Que.) scored his
league-leading fourth game-winner as the visiting McGill Redmen
(7-1) skated to a 6-4 victory over the Waterloo Warriors (7-4) at
the Columbia Ice Field arena.
McGill led 2-0 after the first period on goals from
Marc-Andre Daneau (Aston Jonction, Que.) and
Guillaume Doucet (Anjou, Que.).
After Kyle Sonnenburg (Waterloo, Ont.) replied on
a second-period power play for the Warriors, McGill jumped into a
commanding 4-1 lead on markers from defenceman Ben
Gazdic (Toronto) and forward Andrew
Wright (Toronto).
Verreault-Paul connected on the power play at 1:14 of the final
frame to give McGill a commanding 5-1 lead.
Waterloo made it interesting, getting two third-period goals from
Kyle MacDonald (Inverness, N.S.) and Aaron
Lewicki (Mississauga, Ont.) who narrowed the gap to 5-3
but Redmen rearguard Yan Turcotte (Laval, Que.)
snuffed out any hope of a comeback at 17:10 of the final stanza
with his third goal of the season
QUEEN'S 4, UOIT 3
At UOIT, Joey Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.) scored the
game-tying goal with less than a minute to play and then netted the
winner in the shootout as the Queen's Gaels (5-4-1) knocked off the
UOIT Ridgebacks (4-5-1) by a 4-3 score.
UOIT appeared to have the game in control in the first period as
they outshot the Gaels 10-8 and took a 2-0 lead into the dressing
room.
Jeffrey Johnstone (Etobicoke, Ont.) gave the Gaels
life just 58 seconds into the second period when he netted his
second goal of the season.
After a power play goal restored the two goal lead for the
Ridgebacks, captain Jonathon Lawrance (Steinbach,
Man.) scored to cut the Gaels deficit to one as they headed into
the third.
With time winding down, Derochie scored his team-leading eighth
goal of the season to earn the Gaels a point by sending the game to
overtime.
In the shootout, Derochie opened the scoring as the Gaels first
shooter and Mackenzie Ball of Shannonville, Ont.,
did the rest to earn the Gaels their fifth win of the season.
LAKEHEAD 5, TORONTO 1
At Lakehead, after a close Friday night win, the Thunderwolves
(8-3) left little doubt of victory as they knocked off the Toronto
Varsity Blues (5-6) by a score of 5-1.
Five players scored for the hosts, including Brock
McPherson (Brampton, Ont.) who scored number 13 on the
year and blueliner Pierre-Marc Guilbault (St.
Julie, Que.) who has seven goals to lead all OUA defensemen.
Mark Soares (Burnaby, B.C.), Victor
Anilane (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Ryan
Baird (Thunder Bay, Ont.) also tallied for Lakehead.
Toronto's lone goal came courtesy of David Mooney
(Toronto).
UQTR 5, LAURIER 3
At Wilfrid Laurier, the Golden Hawks (7-3-1) suffered their fourth
loss of the season as they fell to the UQTR Patriots (9-1) by a 5-3
score at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
Three Rivers opened scoring early in the contest as
Guillaume Chicoine (Dubreuilville, Ont.) netted
his first of what would be four points for him in the game.
Paul Bradley (Calgary) tied up the game at ones
only a couple of minutes later as Laurier was on the power play but
it would only last minutes as Olivier Donovan
(Gatineau, Que.) scored a go-ahead marker later in the first. The
Golden Hawks would not be able to recover, as they would go down by
two more before a pair of goals was exchanged.
Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) scored Laurier's
second goal of the night while Bradley netted his second and the
team's third again while on the power play.
OTTAWA 2, BROCK 1
At Brock, the bus ride back to Ottawa from St. Catharines was made
a lot more enjoyable as the Ottawa Gee-Gees (4-6-1) held on to
defeat the host Badgers (6-5) by a 2-1 score on Saturday night.
Corey Thibaudeau (Ottawa) and Paul
Forster (North Vancouver, B.C.) provided the offence for
the Gee-Gees while goaltender Riley Whitlock
(Calgary) stopped 30 of 31 shots.
Brock's Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) netted the
lone goal for his squad.
