CIS Men’s Hockey Top 10 (#4): No. 1 UNB, UQTR, McGill remain perfect

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion UNB Varsity Reds top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for the fourth time in as many media polls this fall, and are one of three teams across the country boasting a perfect record a month into the regular season.

The top-ranked V-Reds improved to 8-0 in conference play over the past week with a 4-3 overtime win over the No. 8 St. Francis Xavier X-Men (6-2-1) and a 5-1 defeat of Dalhousie. UNB scored with less than five minutes remaining in regulation against StFX to send the affair to extra time, and then kept their unblemished record intact thanks to a goal by Alex Aldred 74 seconds into the fourth period.

UNB faces the same two opponents this weekend, hosting StFX Friday night and Dalhousie on Saturday.

A pair of OUA East archrivals are also perfect at this stage of the campaign, the No. 3 UQTR Patriotes showing an 8-0 conference mark and the No. 4 McGill Redmen, who move up one spot in this week’s media poll, following in the division standings at 6-0.

UQTR edged Queen’s 4-3 in its lone outing of the past week, while McGill doubled Carleton 4-2 before shutting out Toronto 5-0.

The Patriotes and Redmen face their toughest tests of the young season this weekend when they hit the road to battle OUA West opponents for the first time this fall. UQTR visits the No. 7 Western Ontario Mustangs (7-2) Friday and the No. 9 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (6-2-1) Saturday, while McGill opens the weekend at Laurier before squaring off against the Waterloo Warriors (6-3-1).

Rounding out the new Top 10 are No. 2 Alberta (8-1-1), No. 5 Saint Mary’s (5-2), No. 6 Manitoba (6-3-1) and No. 10 Lakehead (6-3-1).

The Golden Bears remain at No. 2 for the fourth straight week following a convincing weekend sweep of UBC, 6-2 and 8-1.
