Exhibition: Badgers drop 79-39 decision to Murray State

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's basketball team opened the 2011-12 preseason with a 79-39 loss to NCAA Division I opponent Murray State Racers at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Friday night. Murray State led by 10 points at the half 33-23. In the opening four minutes of the third quarter, the Racers put together a 13-0 run to go up 46-23 with 6:04 left. In the final four minutes of the third, Murray State broke it open putting together another run leading by as many as 31 points 61-30 after thirty minutes.
The Racers had three starters in double figures led by Ivan Aska (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) who led all scorers with a game high 15 points going 6-for-8 from the field. Donte Poole (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Isaiah Caanan (Biloxi, Miss.) both contributed with 13 points each combining for 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Caanan also added a game high six assists.
Rounding out the Murray State leaders were Edward Daniel (Birmingham, Ala.) who chipped in with nine points and six rebounds, Brandon Garrett (Phoenix, Ariz.) with eight points and Jewuan Long (Jackson, Tenn.) and Latreze Mushatt (Saginaw, Mich) who added six points each in the victory.
Leading Brock was senior Andrew Kraus (Markham, Ont.) who recorded 14 points and seven rebounds. In his Badgers debut, DI transfer Jameson Tipping (Orangeviile, Ont.) was held to just five points going 2-for-10 from the field with six turnovers. Returnees Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Mark Gibson (Toronto, Ont.) went a combined 1-for-14 from the field with Mukendi adding five points and Gibson two. Off the bench Anto Raic (Welland, Ont.) chipped in with seven points and Andrew Ferguson (St. Catharines, Ont.) five in a losing effort.
The Brock starting five were held to just 21.8% from the field going 7-for-32. Murray State starters shot a combined 64.7% going 22-for-34 from the floor. For the game, the Badgers shot a dismal 25.0% going 11-for-44 while the Racers combined for 49.2% knocking down 32-for-65. Murray State also outrebounded Brock by a wide margin 45-26.
The Badgers next preseason action is Tuesday, August 9th when they host the University of North Florida Ospreys at the Bob Davis Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
