SMU's Haywood looks to break AUS single-season points record tonight at Acadia

HALIFAX, N.S. (AUS) - Saint Mary's University guard Joey Haywood set a new school record last weekend, and with four points in tonight's game at Acadia, will move past former Axemen star Ted Upshaw to establish a new AUS mark for most points scored in a single season.

The 6-foot-1 native of Vancouver, B.C., has 521 points in 18 regular season games this season, and he currently leads in CIS scoring with an average of 28.9 points per game. University of Saskatchewan guard Jamelle Barrett is next in the national scoring race with a 25.0 points per game average.

Joey, in his third year at SMU and his fourth year of CIS eligibility, surpassed former Huskies star William Njoku's 1992-93 school record of 505 points with a 36-point outing last Wednesday at Dalhousie.

Heading into tonight's match-up in Wolfville, Haywood currently sits in fourth spot on the all-time AUS list, trailing only UPEI's Curtis Robinson (522 points in 1995-96), Acadia's Don Ehler (522 points in 1981-82) and Upshaw, who set the AUS mark of 524 points in 18 regular season games during the 1980-81 campaign.

The Axemen have won two of the three head-to-head meetings with the Huskies this season, with Haywood averaging 23.3 points in those contests. Joey already has two 46-point outings this year and has also climbed onto the AUS career scoring list with 1415 points over his three-years at Saint Mary's. He is now 23rd on the all-time list and ranks fifth in school history.

Haywood, a first-team AUS all-star each of his first two campaigns at Saint Mary's, also earned second-team all-Canadian status last season. He has won two AUS scoring titles and looks poised to capture his third scoring crown in a row with two games left in the 2010-11 season.

Wednesday night's game also has playoff implications for both squads. Saint Mary's, Acadia, UPEI and UNB are all battling for the final three berth at the Subway AUS men's basketball championship in two weeks at the Halifax Metro Centre.

The Huskies are tied with the UPEI Panthers for fifth place in the Atlantic conference standings with 18 points, two points behind the fourth-place UNB Varsity Reds, while the Axemen sit in seventh place with 14 points.

Acadia has three games remaining and a possible 10 points available to gain in the standings, including a pair of four-point home games against the Memorial Sea-Hawks this weekend to end the regular season. The Axemen could potentially finish as high as fourth place or out of the post-season entirely.

The Huskies will round out their season at Dalhousie Saturday night, while the V-Reds and Panthers will each visit StFX and Cape Breton for their final two games of the year.
