Carleton hosts Ottawa in 5th Capital Hoops Classic

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Carleton University and University of Ottawa basketball teams face off at Scotiabank Place in the nation’s capital for the fifth annual MBNA Capital Hoops Classic, Wednesday night.
 
Tip off for the women’s contest is set for 6 p.m. with the men’s duel following at 8 p.m.
 
The MBNA Capital Hoops Classic, which debuted in 2007 as a single men’s game and has featured a doubleheader since its second edition, quickly became one of the highlights of the CIS basketball season. 
 
The inaugural event attracted 9,730 fans, which at the time was a CIS record for a regular season game. That mark was broken in 2009 when a crowd of 10,523 turned up at Scotiabank Place for the third annual Classic.
 
Carleton goes into tonight’s doubleheader as favourite for both contests.
 
The Ravens men are ranked first in the country thanks to an OUA East-leading 14-0 record, while the women also stand atop the OUA East at 12-2, are ranked fourth in the CIS Top 10 and are riding an eight-game winning streak.
 
The Ottawa men (6-8) are tied for fourth place in the OUA East. The Gee-Gees women (9-5) are third.
