Toronto 74 York 88 Final
In their first meeting since the York University Lions upset the Toronto Varsity Blues in last year's playoffs, the Lions turned the trick again by knocking off the No. 9 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues 88-74 on Friday (Jan. 14) at Tait McKenzie Centre. With the win, the Lions improve to .500 (6-6) this season, while the Varsity Blues fall to 7-4. The Lions are tied for third in the OUA East with 12 points.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading baskets and leads throughout. The Lions nearly escaped the first with a 20-17 lead, but Dakota Laurin (Calgary) hit a three-pointer in the dying seconds to tie the game at 20-20.

Both teams continued to trade baskets in the second, but the Lions were able to pull ahead late. Stefan Haynes (North York, Ont.) drained two of his six points in the final seconds of the quarter to put the Lions up 42-40 heading into the third.

Dejan Kravic (London, Ont.) led the Lions with seven points in the quarter, while Varsity Blues guard Justin Holmes (Toronto) drained two three-pointers for a team-high six points.

The Lions increased their lead to four in the third quarter with yet another late scoring surge. Haynes, Justin Bell (Mississauga, Ont.) and rookie Aaron Rados (Ottawa) combined for seven points late in the quarter that gave the Lions a 66-62 lead heading into the fourth.

David Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) led the Lions with six points in the quarter. The Varsity Blues had a tough time containing the speedy Tyndale, who led many of the Lions' scoring drives throughout the contest.

The Lions pulled away in the fourth quarter en route to a dominant 14-point win. Tyndale continued to demonstrate his scoring touch, tallying nine points in the quarter.

Haynes was a force in the paint, coming up with a huge block on Andrew Wasik (Burnaby, B.C.) early in the quarter and a huge board in the dying minutes to preserve the Lions' win.

The Lions will be in action again on Saturday (Jan. 15) when they host the Ryerson Rams (3-8) at Tait McKenzie Centre. The game tips off at 8pm, following the women's game.

Ottawa 105 RMC 33 Final Boxscore
The Gee-Gees dominated over RMC in tonight's 105-33 victory, gaining a real team win with the entire roster contributing.

The Gee-Gees never allowed RMC more than 9 points in a quarter, but were able to stack up the points themselves with every player scoring and seven players contributing points in the double digits.

Head coach James Derouin was quick to note this statistic, "That's pretty amazing, because nobody had more than 14 points, everybody scored and seven guys in double figures never happens. So there's no individual stat that really stands out, but [this team statistic] is a great thing to see."

"From a team standpoint, we got our guys a lot of playing time, and game like that are good for that," said Derouin in reflection on the team play. "We're happy; the guys stayed focus, which is always a challenge in a game like that. They did a great job."

The Gee-Gees will now need to say focused heading into tomorrow night's match-up against Queen's (2-9 OUA) at 8:00 p.m.

Carleton 86 Queen's 73 Final Boxscore
TORONTO - The Queen's Gaels overcame a two goal deficit early and beat the Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team 5-4, thanks to Jonathon Lawrance of Steinbach, Man., who scored the overtime winner just before time expired.

The Gaels had difficulty early as they fell behind by two goals three minutes into the second after goals by the Blues' Andrew Bergin of Scarborough, Ont. and David Mooney of Toronto. However, a strong performance by Georgetown, Ontario's Steele De Fazio kept the Gaels in the game as Welland, Ontario's Payton Liske scored an unassisted power play goal halfway through the second to bring Queen's within one.

Toronto would be the first to score in the third as Dan Brewer, another Toronto native, scored two minutes into the period. The Gaels would not be trailing for long however, as Winnipeg's Jordan Mirwaldt scored for the Gaels and it would be the first of three in three minutes.

Liske added his second of the game one minute later before Alexi Pianosi scored on the power play one minute after Liske. A late penalty would prove costly for Queen's as Blake Boddy of Ajax, Ont. tied the game for Toronto on the power play with seven minutes before time expired.

In overtime it appeared as though the game was headed for a shootout until Lawrance capitalized on a turnover and put the puck under the crossbar on the Gaels' second shot of the extra period with 32 seconds remaining. The goal was unassisted.

The win puts the Gaels two points ahead of the Varsity Blues in the OUA East standings and moves Queen's into seventh with 18 points.

Liske and Mirwaldt led the Gaels with three points each. Jordan Soquila of Maple Ridge, B.C. added an assist on Mirwaldt's goal. De Fazio was solid in net for the Gaels as he turned away 34 of 38 shots, including 16 saves in the first period.

The Gaels will be back in action this Tuesday in Kingston when they take on the Royal Military College Paladins. Puck drop is set for 8:30 pm.

Calgary 63 UBC 74 Final Boxscore
VANCOUVER - It wasn't their strongest offensive performance, but a few timely three-pointers from Nathan Yu were enough to help the UBC Thunderbirds grind out a 74-63 win over the Calgary Dinos on Friday to extend their win streak to nine games. Calgary wasn't helped by the fact that Canada West rebounding leader Tyler Fidler was limited to five minutes of action in the first half because of two early fouls and an injury. He went down late in the second quarter along with teammate Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson on the same play, and although he returned to start the second half, Ogungbemi-Jackson sat out the rest of the game after a hot start offensively.

Fidler still managed to pull down nine rebounds and lead his team with 13 points in limited action, but he was the only starter to hit double-digits in scoring for Calgary.

For UBC, Brent Malish had 13 points and Kamar Burke scored 11. Nathan Yu's 19 points off the bench were a game-high, and Doug Plumb also came off the bench to chip in 13.

The win moves them to 13-2 on the year, keeping them on pace with Trinity Western at the top of the conference. The Dinos fall to 5-8, and will be out for some revenge tomorrow night when they wrap up their series with UBC at War Memorial Gym. Game time is 8 p.m.

The Cascades were led by Sam Freeman, with a game-high 26 point performance. Joel Friesen added 23, while Alberta got 24 points from Canada West leading scorer Daniel Ferguson.
